A processing machine includes a splash guard that defines and forms a processing area, a tool spindle that is movable in a Z-axis direction and a Y-axis direction inside the processing area, an additive-manufacturing head connected to the tool spindle, and a line body that extends from the additive-manufacturing head, is drawn from an inside of the processing area to an outside, and supplies material powder and a laser beam to the additive-manufacturing head. A maximum movement amount of the tool spindle in the Y-axis direction is shorter than a maximum movement amount of the tool spindle in the Z-axis direction. A drawing direction of the line body from the inside to the outside of the processing area is a direction intersecting the Z-axis direction in top view.

Disclosed embodiments relate to recoater systems for use with additive manufacturing systems. A recoater assembly may be used to deposit a material layer onto a build surface of an additive manufacturing system. In some instances, the recoater assembly may include a powder entrainment system that trails behind a recoater blade of the recoater assembly relative to a direction of motion of the recoater blade across a build surface of the additive manufacturing system. The powder entrainment system may generate a flow of fluid across a portion of the build surface behind the recoater blade that at least temporarily entrains powder above a threshold height from the build surface to mitigate, or prevent, the formation of defects on the build surface with heights greater than the threshold height.

Disclosed herein is an additive manufacturing system that includes an energy source, a powder supply, and a build chamber. The build chamber includes a base plate and two or more variable build plates coupled to the base plate. The two or more variable build plates each have one or more adjustable features. The two or more variable build plates are configurable to position two or more parts at different heights relative to a top level of the build chamber. The additive manufacturing system also includes a control system configured to control the energy source to fuse material from the powder supply to at least one of the two or more parts while the two or more parts are respectively positioned by the two or more variable build plates at different heights relative to the top level of the build chamber.

Device for Additive Manufacturing of a Workpiece

A device for additive manufacturing of a workpiece includes a production platform supporting a defined material layer of particulate material, a structuring tool, an inspection sensor, a control unit, and a position encoder. The inspection sensor has a line scan camera and a line light source and is movable along a movement direction relative to the production platform. The position encoder generates a position signal representing a respective instantaneous position of the inspection sensor relative to the production platform. The control unit generates a spatially resolved image of the defined layer using the line light source, the line scan camera, and the position signal. The control unit controls the structuring tool in order to produce a defined workpiece layer by selectively solidifying particulate material of the defined material layer based on the image of the defined material layer and/or an image of a previously produced workpiece layer.
