In a top view the first and second cutting edges on the same nose portion form a nose angle () of 70-85 relative to each other. Each nose portion includes a third convex cutting edge adjacent to the first cutting edge and a fourth cutting edge adjacent to the third cutting edge. In a top view the fourth cutting edge forms an angle () of 0-34 relative to the bisector.

Coating layer with microstructure serrated edge

A cutting tool formed by a coating layer on a substrate has cutting edges that feature serrations. The linear dimensions of the serrations may vary from a few nanometers up to 10 microns. The serrations result in a smoother cut edge on the workpiece, particularly when the workpiece is formed of certain materials that are seen as particularly difficult to cut, such as hardened steels.

Cutting insert

A cutting insert has a bottom supporting surface, a center cutting edge, two secondary cutting edges, realized on both sides of the center cutting edge and offset in relation to the center cutting edge, and two transition edges connecting the center cutting edge to the secondary cutting edge adjacent in each case. The two secondary cutting edges are realized in each case vertically offset and, where applicable, also offset in depth with respect to the center cutting edge and are laterally spaced from the center cutting edge. The transition edges, in each case in a non-edge-overlapping region, have at least over a portion an inclination n where 2n20 in relation to a height direction which extends at right angles with respect to a main extension plane of the supporting surface.

Method and tool for producing a surface of predetermined roughness

For producing a cylindrical surface that has a surface structure of predetermined geometry suitable for application of material by thermal spraying, a geometrically predetermined groove structure of minimal depth and width is introduced into the surface by a tool embodied as a follow-on tool in that a groove cross-section is processed successively to a final size. In order for the surface to be producible in mass production with constant quality, the groove structure is worked in such that first a base groove is introduced with a groove bottom width that is smaller than the groove bottom width of the finished groove. Subsequently, at least one flank of the base groove is processed for producing an undercut groove profile by a non-cutting action or cutting action wherein the introduced groove structure is deformed in such a way that the groove openings are constricted by upsetting deformations of material.

A cutting insert includes a top face, a bottom face and a plurality of side walls extending between the top face and the bottom face. A peripheral cutting edge is defined at the juncture of each side wall and the top face. Each cutting edge includes a linear cutting edge portion and a concave cutting edge portion that curves inwardly in a plane that is perpendicular to a plane containing a central axis of the cutting insert. A radiused corner portion connects two adjacent cutting edges. Each linear cutting edge portion extends from one radiused corner portion to the concave cutting edge portion and the concave cutting edge portion extends from the linear cutting edge portion to another radiused corner portion.

Drill cutting insert

A drill cutting insert has a cutting edge at a transition between a side surface and a top side which is formed with n identical cutting corners and n identical partial cutting edges with n{3, 4} extending between the cutting corners. Each of the n partial cutting edges has: adjoining a first cutting corner, a main lip which is straight in plan view of the top side; adjoining the other cutting corner, a secondary lip which is straight in plain view of the top side, and a transition section, via which the main lip and the secondary lip merge into one another and which has a convex section adjoining the main lip and a concave section adjoining the secondary lip.
