Ceramic cutting insert and method of making same

A cutting insert includes a body made of a ceramic material. The body has a first surface, a second surface and at least one flank surface extending between the first surface and the second surface. The first surface includes a chip forming feature extending in a radially outwardly direction to a cutting edge and extending in a radially inwardly direction to an inner edge. The chip forming feature includes a front wall that slopes downward from the cutting edge radially inward toward a rounded bottom surface and a back wall that slopes upward from the rounded bottom surface radially inward to the inner edge. The chip forming feature can include an optional land surface between the cutting edge and the front wall.

Method for manufacturing cubic boron nitride cutting tool and cubic boron nitride cutting tool

A method for manufacturing a cubic boron nitride cutting tool including a base metal and sintered cubic boron nitride compact at a corner portion of the base metal, capable of improving the accuracy of the center height and reducing the angle of inclination or width of a negative rake face; and the cubic boron nitride cutting tool. The method includes grinding the compact by pressing it against an end face of a grindstone of a grinder to form flank and rake faces on the compact while the base metal of the cutting tool is held by a chuck of the grinder, so that the compact is substantially ground. The rake face is formed to be recessed from a top face of the base metal or only a portion of the compact that protrudes from a base-metal rake face is ground while the tool is continuously held by the chuck.

A cutting tool for cutting a rotationally symmetrical surface of a rotating workpiece includes the step of feeding the cutting tool in a direction inclined with respect to a rotational axis of the rotationally symmetrical surface, while holding the cutting tool in contact with the rotationally symmetrical surface. In the step of feeding the cutting tool, the cutting tool has a point that is in contact with the rotationally symmetrical surface and the point shifts as the cutting tool is fed. The cutting tool includes: a rake face; a flank face; and a cutting edge connecting the rake face and the flank face. The cutting edge as seen from above the flank face has a shape including at least one arc, and the arc has a radius of curvature of not less than 100 mm and not more than 500 mm.

In an embodiment, a cutting insert including a base member, a first face, a second face, a cutting edge, and a nose portion. The base member includes a coating layer on at least a part thereof. The first face has corner portions. The second face is adjacent to the first face. The cutting edge is on at least a part of the ridgeline portion of the first face and the second face, and includes first and second cutting edges. The first cutting edge is on the coating layer and has a C chamfered surface with a first width of 5 m to 30 m in the front view of the first face and a chamfer angle of 35 to 50. The nose portion is at the corner portions between the first cutting edge and the second cutting edge.

SURFACE COATED CUTTING TOOL AND METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING THE SAME

A surface coated cutting tool having surfaces including a rake face and a flank face and a cutting edge defined by a boundary portion between the rake face and the flank face includes a substrate and a coating which covers the surfaces of the substrate, the coating having a TiAlN layer having an NaCl type crystal structure, and relation of 0.65<XR0.9, 0.65<XF0.9, 0.4XE0.7, XRXE0.2, and XFXE0.2 being satisfied, with a composition of the TiAlN layer in a cutting edge region located in the cutting edge being expressed as Ti.sub.1-XEAl.sub.XEN, a composition thereof in a rake face region located in the rake face being expressed as Ti.sub.1-XRAl.sub.XRN, and a composition thereof in a flank face region located in the flank face being expressed as Ti.sub.1-XFAl.sub.XFN.
