Turning insert for metal cutting
12240044 · 2025-03-04 · ·

A turning insert includes a top surface, a bottom surface, and side surfaces connecting the top and bottom surfaces. A reference plane is located parallel to and between the top surface and the bottom surface. A center axis intersects and extends perpendicular to the reference plane. Three nose portions are formed symmetrically around the center axis. Each nose portion has a first cutting edge, a second cutting edge and a convex nose cutting edge connecting the first and second cutting edges. As seen in in a top view, the first and second cutting edges on the same nose portion form a nose angle of 25-50. The first cutting edge includes a first sub-portion and a second sub-portion. A distance from the nose cutting edge to the first sub-portion is shorter than a distance from the nose cutting edge to the second sub-portion.

A cutting element for use in a cutting operation, comprising a cutting edge (CE) capable of cutting out material from a workpiece during the operation, to form therein a workpiece corner of angle alpha. There exists at least one view of the cutting edge in which a portion of the cutting edge is delimitable by a first (L1) and a second (L2) line oriented tangentially to the portion of the cutting edge portion at respective tangency points A and B. The lines form therebetween a cutting angle corresponding to the workpiece corner angle alpha and have a vertex 0. For a bisector of the cutting angle intersecting the portion of the cutting edge at the point C, the projection C of the point C of the portion of the cutting edge on a line OL passing through the vertex 0 perpendicularly to the plane of the one view is located between projections A1 and B of the respective points A and B of the portion of the cutting edge on the line OL.

A cutting assembly includes toolholder and a cutting insert. The cutting insert includes a top surface, a rake face and a cutting edge. The top surface includes a coolant duct along a central, longitudinal axis, A, that directs coolant from an inlet region to a cutting region. The cutting region includes a pair of chip deflectors and a plurality of coolant directing elements separating a plurality of coolant channels configured in at least one hub and spoke arrangement that directs coolant radially outward from the central, longitudinal axis, A, to the entire cutting edge of the cutting insert.

CUTTING INSERT

A cutting insert has a top surface, a bottom surface, and an outer peripheral surface. A ridgeline between the top surface and the outer peripheral surface includes a first cutting edge. A protrusion is provided on the top surface. In a first cross section, a distance between the first cutting edge and the protrusion in a direction perpendicular to the bottom surface is defined as a first distance. In a second cross section, a distance between the first cutting edge and the protrusion in a direction perpendicular to the bottom surface is defined as a third distance. The third distance is longer than the first distance. A ratio of a height of the protrusion to a width of the protrusion in the second cross section is smaller than a ratio of a height of the protrusion to a width of the protrusion in the first cross section.

A cutting insert may include an upper surface, a lateral surface, and a cutting edge including a boundary between the upper surface and the lateral surface. The upper surface may include a first rising face that extends upward and a second rising face that is connected to an upper side of the first rising face and extends upward. The first rising face may include a first region that extends along a corner portion and a second region that extends along a side portion. The second rising face may include a third region connected to the first region and a fourth region connected to the second region. An entirety of a boundary between the first region and the third region may be positioned above the cutting edge. A boundary between the second region and the fourth region may include a portion disposed below the cutting edge.
