A method for manufacturing a cutting tool having a rake face, a flank face, and an edge having a ridge line interconnecting the rake face and the flank face, wherein on the flank face there is a cutting edge region from the ridge line of the edge to a point A away therefrom on the side of the flank face by a distance X, the method comprising producing and processing the flank face with a laser, the producing and processing being producing and processing the cutting edge region along the ridge line of the edge with a first laser beam having a depth of focus equal to or deeper than a width of the cutting edge region when the distance X is the width of the cutting edge region, the distance X being 0.2 mm or more and 5 mm or less.
DIAMOND COATED TOOL
The diamond coated tool of the present invention is a diamond coated tool including a base material and a diamond layer coating a surface of the base material, and characterized in that the surface of the base material has an arithmetic average roughness Ra of not less than 0.1 μm and not more than 10 μm and an average length of roughness profile elements RSm of not less than 3.1 μm and not more than 5.4 μm, and that the diamond layer has a plurality of cavities at a portion bordering on the base material.
COMPOSITE DIAMOND BODY AND COMPOSITE DIAMOND TOOL
A composite diamond body includes a diamond base material and a stable layer disposed on the diamond base material. The stable layer may have a thickness of 0.001 μm or more and less than 10 μm, and may include a plurality of layers. A composite diamond tool includes the composite diamond body. There are thus provided highly wear-resistant composite diamond body and composite diamond tool that are even applicable to mirror-finish planarization of a workpiece which reacts with diamond to cause the diamond to wear.
Cutting tool with chip breaker as well as manufacturing process for production of this cutting tool
A cutting tool with a device for the prevention of uncontrolled chip formation which are placed in a specific distance to a cutting edge at a layer of polycrystalline diamond (PCD) or polycrystalline boron nitride (PCBN), and to a manufacturing process for the production of such a cutting tool. The PCD or PCBN layer incorporates the device for the prevention of uncontrolled chip formation as an integral part, and the layer with the device for the prevention of uncontrolled chip formation and the cutting edge are produced by way of an additive procedure, or that the device and the cutting edge are produced by removing material of the PCD or PCBN body by laser or electro-erosion.
CUTTER ASSEMBLY AND METHODS FOR MAKING SAME
A cutter assembly for a cutting tool has a super-hard volume of super-hard material having a proximal end and a distal end and including a cavity; and a cover member. The super-hard volume has a super-hard surface at the distal end including a cutting edge. The cavity has a cavity open end at the distal end. The super-hard surface includes a cavity peripheral area coterminous with the cavity open end and the cover member has a cover peripheral area configured to mate with the cavity peripheral area to allow the cover member to cover the cavity at the cavity open end, the covered cavity providing a housing chamber within the super-hard volume. A method of making a cutter assembly is also disclosed.
POLYCRYSTALLINE DIAMOND COMPOSITE COMPACT ELEMENT, TOOLS INCORPORATING SAME AND METHOD FOR MAKING SAME
The invention relates to a PCD composite compact element comprising a PCD structure integrally bonded at an interface to a cemented carbide substrate; the PCD structure comprising coherently bonded diamond grains having a mean size no greater than 15 microns; the cemented carbide substrate comprising carbide particles dispersed in a metallic binder, the carbide particles comprising a carbide compound of a metal; wherein the ratio of the amount of metallic binder to the amount of the metal at points in the substrate deviates from a mean value by at most 20 percent of the mean value. The invention further relates to a method for making a PDC compact element comprising a PCD structure integrally bonded to a substrate formed of cemented carbide; the method including introducing a source of excess carbon to the substrate at a bonding surface of the substrate to form a carburised substrate; contacting an aggregated mass of diamond grains with the carburised substrate; and sintering the diamond grains in the presence of a solvent/catalyst material for diamond; wherein the mean size of the diamond grains in the aggregated mass is no greater than 30 microns.
