A cutting insert has a first (top) end surface, a second (bottom) end surface, a peripheral side surface connecting the top and bottom end surfaces, and a mounting hole having a central axis O which penetrates the top and bottom end surfaces. Cutting edges are formed on an intersecting edge between the first end surface and the peripheral side surface. The second end surface has an inclined part. When a virtual plane substantially perpendicular to the axis O and passing through any point of the cutting edges is defined, the inclined part is inclined so as to be more distant from the virtual plane, heading from the peripheral side surface to the axis O. A projected part projected in a direction along the axis O is formed in an area around the mounting hole in the inclined part. This reinforces the strength of the mounting hole.

A cutting insert has an upper surface (21), a lower surface (91) and a side surface (61) that connects the two surfaces. A cutting edge is formed at an intersecting edge between the upper surface (21) and the side surface (61). The cutting edge includes at least a major cutting edge (33), a corner edge (34) connected to the major cutting edge (33), and a curved wiper edge (35) located on the opposite side of the major cutting edge (33) across the corner edge (34). A first angle made by the major cutting edge (33) and the chord of the wiper edge (35) is 155<180, and a positive land is formed in the wiper edge (35). The cutting edge may further include an inner cutting edge (36) located on an opposite side of the corner edge (34) across the wiper edge (35).

A slotting tool body includes a disc-like cutter portion and a shank portion projecting rearwardly therefrom. The cutter portion includes a resilient clamping portion having a peripherally disposed insert receiving slot. The shank portion includes a peripherally disposed forward shank recess that is axially adjacent the cutter portion. A radially inward portion of the insert receiving slot merges in the rearward direction with the forward shank recess. A cutting insert is releasably and resiliently clamped in the insert receiving slot to form a rotary slot cutting tool. The cutting insert includes two cutting portions that each include a long and short insert lateral extension, the long insert lateral extension being longer than the short insert lateral extension. The longest insert lateral extensions are orated on opposite sides of the cutting insert.

TANGENTIALLY MOUNTED INDEXABLE CUTTING INSERT WITH SEGMENTED CUTTING EDGE AND TRIANGULAR-SHAPED MARGIN

A cutting insert having two opposing end surfaces, two identical opposing major side surfaces and two identical opposing minor side surfaces. Each end surface has four corners comprising two lowered corners and two raised corners, the two lowered corners being diagonally opposite each other, the two raised corners being diagonally opposite each other. The cutting insert also includes a major cutting edge formed at an intersection of each major edge and the end surface. A section of the major cutting edge proximate the raised corner constitutes a leading end of the major cutting edge, and a section of the major cutting edge proximate the lowered corner constitutes a trailing end of the major cutting edge. An angled margin only partially extends along the leading end of the major cutting edge and segments the major cutting edge.
