Cutting insert and pocket with uninterrupted and continuous seating surface perimeter
A round cutting insert has a seating surface with a plurality of projections formed on the seating surface proximate a central opening. The projections do not extend to an outer perimeter of the seating surface such that the outer perimeter is continuous and uninterrupted a full 360 degrees. An insert-receiving pocket includes a seating surface with a plurality of dimples for receiving the plurality of projections to prevent rotation of the cutting insert when mounted in the insert-receiving pocket. The plurality of dimples do not extend to an outer perimeter of the seating surface such that the outer perimeter is continuous and uninterrupted a full 360 degrees, thereby maximizing contact between the cutting insert and the pocket.
Cutting tool and cutting insert having complementary engagement features for eccentric mounting
A cutting tool has a cutting body with a first insert pocket and an indexable cutting insert removably mounted therein. The first insert pocket has a first seat surface with a plurality of first engagement elements and a first support wall transverse thereto. The cutting insert has upper and lower surfaces and a boundary surface extending therebetween. The lower surface has a plurality of lower engaging elements and the boundary surface has a plurality of alternating first and second peripheral surfaces intersecting the upper surface to form first and second upper cutting edges. In each index position with the lower surface in contact with the first seat surface, the first support wall prevents translation of the cutting insert in a first direction, and the first engagement elements eccentrically contact the lower engaging elements to prevent translation of the cutting insert in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction.
COMPRESSION MILLING CUTTER WITH INDEXABLE CUTTING INSERTS
A compression milling cutter includes a shank and a front cutting portion that terminates at a leading end of the milling cutter. The front cutting portion has a first circumferential row of one or more insert receiving pockets proximate a leading end of the milling cutter, and a second circumferential row of one or more insert receiving pockets, each insert receiving pocket configured to receive a respective indexable cutting insert. The cutting insert mounted in the first circumferential row has a positive axial rake angle, A, and the indexable cutting insert mounted in an insert pocket of the second circumferential row has a negative axial rake angle, B. Because of the different axial rake angles, chips generated during a machining operation flow in opposite directions, thereby creating a compression zone disposed between the first and second circumferential rows. This compression zone replicates the cutting action of a solid end mill, particularly when machining fiber reinforced plastic materials.
Cutting insert having bottom surface with inclined parts and indexable rotary cutting tool
A cutting insert has a first (top) end surface, a second (bottom) end surface, a peripheral side surface connecting the top and bottom end surfaces, and a mounting hole having a central axis O which penetrates the top and bottom end surfaces. Cutting edges are formed on an intersecting edge between the first end surface and the peripheral side surface. The second end surface has an inclined part. When a virtual plane substantially perpendicular to the axis O and passing through any point of the cutting edges is defined, the inclined part is inclined so as to be more distant from the virtual plane, heading from the peripheral side surface to the axis O. A projected part projected in a direction along the axis O is formed in an area around the mounting hole in the inclined part. This reinforces the strength of the mounting hole.
Cutting tool and indexable rotary cutting tool
A cutting insert including a first end surface, a second end surface and a peripheral side surface extending therebetween. The first and second end surfaces each having one substantially quadrangular portion and two substantially semicircular portions which are respectively joined to two opposing sides of the substantially quadrangular portion. An intersecting edge between each of the first and second end surfaces and the peripheral side surface is provided with a cutting edge. The cutting edge is formed in at least part of the substantially semicircular portion. At least part of a portion of the peripheral side surface which is adjacent to the substantially quadrangular portion of each of the first and second end surfaces, and at least part of a portion of the peripheral side surface which is adjacent to the substantially semicircular portion, each have a function of coming into contact with an insert seat.
TRIANGULAR-SHAPED INDEXABLE CUTTING INSERT HAVING RECESSED SIDE SURFACES AND ROTARY CUTTING TOOL
An indexable cutting insert has opposing upper and lower end surfaces, and a peripheral surface including three side surfaces circumferentially alternating with three corner surfaces. The three side surfaces define an imaginary triangle and an imaginary hexagon. Each corner surface intersects the upper end surface to form an upper corner peripheral edge having a primary cutting edge. In a top view, each triangle side traverses two upper corner peripheral edges, imaginary lines tangential to the end points of each primary cutting edge are either collinear or form an obtuse angle greater than 175 degrees, each primary cutting edge has a primary length greater than half the hexagon side length, and at least one triangle side traverses each primary cutting edge. The insert is removably secured in a rotary cutting tool such that one of the upper corner peripheral edges contains an axially forwardmost point of the insert's upper peripheral edge.
Cutting insert and tool holder on which cutting insert is provided
Provided are a cutting insert and a tool holder on which the cutting insert is provided. The cutting insert includes a circular upper surface, a circular lower surface, a cylindrical lateral surface for connecting the upper surface and the lower surface, an upper cutting edge formed between the upper surface and the lateral surface, a lower cutting edge formed between the lower surface and the lateral surface, and a plurality of rotation-preventing parts provided at the lateral surface so as to prevent the cutting insert from rotating with respect to the tool holder. Each rotation preventing part includes an inner curved surface recessed toward the center of the lateral surface and convexly rounded so as to form concentric circles in conjunction with the lateral surface, and a stepped rotation-preventing surface parallel to the axial direction of the insert and connecting the inner curved surface and the lateral surface.
Cutting tool and a cutting insert for chip-removing tool
A cutting tool has a tool body having at least one pocket, at least one cutting insert releasably fixed to the pocket and a fastening device for securing the insert in the pocket. The pocket has a raised portion) with a flat upper support face arranged to be received in a recess of the insert and support the insert by receiving a bottom surface of the recess bearing on the support face. A projecting member of the raised portion has delimiting walls designed to bear against border walls of the recess of an insert for establishing mutual contact therewith and prevent rotation of the insert in the pocket by receiving a rotational moment acting on the insert in an active chip-removing state of the tool.
Cutting insert, a cutting insert holder, a system including the cutting insert and cutting insert holder, and a method of manufacturing thereof
A cutting insert for metalworking operations is retained within a cutting insert holder by a resilient tab on the holder that engages a recess on the stem of the insert. The cutting insert and the holder may be fabricated using rapid prototyping techniques such as 3D printing.
Cutting tool with replaceable abutment members and toolholder and cutting insert therefor
A toolholder includes a bottom abutment surface, a projection extending upwardly from the bottom abutment surface, the projection including an internally threaded opening, having a central axis that is offset from a central axis of the projection in a first direction, and a clamping screw having external threads for mating with threads of the internally threaded opening and a head having a bottom clamping surface shaped as a truncated cone for contacting an insert clamping surface and urging an insert substantially in a first direction when the clamping screw is tightened relative to the toolholder and the insert. The toolholder also includes at least one abutment member extending from a side wall of the projection in a radial direction, each abutment member having an abutment point, at least which is closer to the central axis of the projection than to the central axis of the internally threaded opening.
