The distal end of the second gripping member is attached to a proximal end of the movable pinion and the distal ends of the outer tubular member and inner tubular member have at least two openings that are off-center but substantially aligned to allow a surgical cable or wire to pass through and to exert a shearing force on the cable or wire when the inner tubular member rotates with respect to the outer tubular member in response to compressing the first and second gripping members.

A surgical instrument for cutting an elongated element. The surgical instrument may have a compact size for use in-situ during a surgical procedure. The surgical instrument is also configured to provide the necessary mechanical advantage to cut the elongated element. The surgical instrument may include first and second arms that are pivotally connected together at a pivot. The arms include blades positioned at or towards distal ends of the arms that act together to cut the elongated element. A force mechanism is positioned between the arms to pivot the arms between an open orientation and a closed cutting orientation. The force mechanism may be positioned directly between the arms to reduce the overall size of the instrument.

The invention relates to manual pliers (1) which comprise a fixed cutting jaw (26) and a movable cutting jaw (23). The manual pliers (1) comprise a first maximal opening position in which it is possible to run through a working stroke part caused by the closure of the hand levers (2). In the first maximal opening position the latching lever (16) and a pushing lever (19) engage with a toothing (32) of the movable cutting jaw (23). With the actuation of the latching lever (16) it is possible to transfer the manual pliers into a second maximal opening position in which the opening angle of the hand levers (2) is larger than in the first maximal opening position. In the second maximal opening position the latching lever (16) and the pushing lever (19) do not engage with the toothing (32) of the movable cutting jaw (23). For the definition of the two opening positions, two stops are used which are formed by the latching lever (16) and a swivel bolt of the latching lever (16).

The strand cutter includes a fixed blade received in the fixed blade receptacle and a rotating blade assembly. The rotating blade assembly includes a cylindrical cutting body, a replaceable shear blade or a cutting edge, and a drive gear engagement coupled to or integrated with the cutting body. The drive gear engagement engages the drive assembly so as to allow the transmission of torque from the drive assembly to the blade mount, the blade mount coupled to or integrally formed with the cutting body. The strand cutter also includes a flange plate, wherein the flange plate receives the shoulder. The flange plate retains the nose piece in engagement to the drive assembly.

An articulating surgical rod bender assembly includes first and second support members pivotably connected at an interface, a first drive wheel rotatably attached to the first support member, a second drive wheel rotatably attached to the first support member and coupled with the first drive wheel, and means for rotating the first drive wheel so that rotation of the first drive wheel causes rotation of the second drive wheel to advance a surgical rod through the assembly. The assembly also includes a guide element selectively positionable so that a surgical rod positioned with a first side contacting the first drive wheel, an opposing second side contacting the second drive wheel, and one of the first and second sides contacting the guide element is bent to a desired curvature or radius of curvature by the guide element and the first and/or second drive wheels as is passes through the assembly.

A wire rope cutter includes a first handle and a second handle, a first cutting jaw and a second cutting jaw, a first pivot for pivotally connecting the first jaw and the first handle; and a second pivot for pivotally connecting the second jaw to the second handle. A third pivot pivotally connects the first handle to the second handle, and a fourth pivot pivotally connects the first jaw to the second jaw. The first jaw includes a web area having an elongated opening, and the second jaw includes a web area having an elongated opening. The third pivot is formed by a fastener extending through the elongated openings of the first jaw web area and the second jaw web area for pivotally connecting the handles together.
