Reciprocating saw

A reciprocating saw includes a housing, a motor, and a drive mechanism. The drive mechanism includes a driven gear that is rotated by the motor. The driven gear is vertically-oriented within the housing. The drive mechanism also includes a drive arm coupled to the driven gear to translate rotary motion of the driven gear into reciprocating motion, and an output shaft coupled to the drive arm to reciprocate relative to the housing along a spindle axis through a cutting stroke and a return stroke. The drive mechanism further includes a counterweight coupled to the driven gear and rotating with the driven gear through a path and in a same direction. As the counterweight moves through a rearward half of the path, the counterweight generally moves in an upward direction, and as the counterweight moves through a forward half of the path, the counterweight generally moves in a downward direction.

The reciprocating mechanism includes a reciprocating rod and the cutter-lifting mechanism includes an actuating member and a pushing member. The actuating member includes a first engaging portion and a second engaging portion when the reciprocating rod is driven to perform a reciprocating motion, the reciprocating rod drives the pushing member to deflect close to the first engaging portion or second engaging portion; when the first engaging portion or the second engaging portion is driven to move close to the pushing member, the first engaging portion or second engaging portion pushes the pushing member towards the side which the first engaging portion or the second engaging portion deflects to force the reciprocating rod to implement a cutter-lifting motion.

The drive mechanism includes a first counterweight coupled to the driven gear for rotation with the driven gear about a rotational axis, and a second counterweight spaced apart from the first counterweight and integrally formed with the driven gear. The first counterweight and the second counterweight are driven by the motor to rotate relative to the housing along a path.

A reciprocating saw includes a housing, a motor positioned within the housing, and a shoe coupled to the housing. The shoe is configured to engage a workpiece. The reciprocating saw also includes a proximity sensor configured to detect the workpiece when engaged with the shoe. In response to the proximity sensor detecting formation of a gap between the shoe and the workpiece, the proximity sensor is operable to deactivate the motor.
