A method of securing an insert in a preselected region of a workpiece. An opening wall is formed in the workpiece with an opening wall surface defining an opening to produce a remainder segment of the workpiece. The opening encompasses or coincides with the preselected region. An insert is provided to fit in the opening. An insert heated portion and a remainder segment heated portion are heated to a hot working temperature, at which they are plastically deformable. While the insert is subjected to an engagement motion, to move the insert relative to the remainder segment, an insert engagement surface of the insert is pressed against the opening wall surface, for plastic deformation of the insert heated portion and of the remainder segment heated portion, creating a metallic bond between the insert and the remainder segment. The insert and the remainder segment are allowed to cool, to bond them together.

Cylinder device and rod manufacturing method

In a cylinder device, a rod of which one end portion is joined to a piston in a cylinder and the other end portion protrudes from an opening portion of the cylinder includes a first member that is a hollow cylindrical member in sliding contact with a sliding contact member, and a second member that does not come into sliding contact with the sliding contact member. An outer diameter of at least a first member side end portion of the second member is smaller than an outer diameter of the first member. An inner peripheral portion of the first member is joined to an outer peripheral portion of the second member by friction weld joining.

A system includes a tool configured to be positioned proximate to respective welding surface of separate components. The tool includes a tool head and an actuator configured to drive rotation of the tool head. The tool also includes a controller having a memory operatively coupled to a processor. The processor is configured to provide a command signal to the actuator to apply a pulsed torque to drive rotation of the tool head to facilitate joining the respective welding surfaces of the separate components to one another.

Low deflection sputtering target assembly and methods of making same
09831073 · 2017-11-28 · ·

Described is a design and method for producing a sputtering target assembly with low deflection made from target material solder bonded to composite backing plate with coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) matching the target material. The composite backing plate is composite configuration composed of at least two different materials with different CTE. The composite backing plate, after plastic deformation, if necessary, has a CTE matching the target material and low and desirable deflection in the bonding process, and therefore, resulting in a low deflection and low stress target material bonded to composite backing plate assembly. The method includes manufacturing composite backing plate with a flat bond surface, heat treating of target blank and composite backing plate to achieve desirable shape of bond surfaces, solder bonding target to a backing plate, and slowly cooling the assembly to room temperature. Matching CTE in both target material and backing plate eliminates the problem of CTE mismatch and prevents the assembly from deflection and internal stress.
