ADHESIVE BONDED COMPOSITE-TO-METAL HYBRID VANES AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURE
The present disclosure provides methods and systems for composite-to-metal hybrid bonded structures compromising the laser surface treatment on titanium alloys to promote adhesive bond performance. For example, a computer may be programmed to set a laser path corresponding to a predetermined geometric pattern. A laser may be coupled to the computer and apply a pulsed laser beam to a contact surface of the titanium alloy along the predefined geometric pattern. The laser may generate an open pore oxide layer on the contact surface of the substrate with a thickness of 100 and 500 nm. The open pore oxide layer may have a topography corresponding to the predefined geometric pattern. The topography may contain high degree of open pore structure and promote adhesive bond performance. Adhesive, primer or composite resin matrix may fully infiltrate into the open pore structures. Adhesive and composite laminate may co-cure to form composite-to-titanium hybrid bonded structures.
Methods for establishing hydrophilic and hydrophobic areas on a surface of a substrate or film and associated microfluidic devices
Embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to methods, systems and devices, for precise and reduced spot-size capabilities using a laser to alter surfaces without chemical treatment, chemical waste, or chemical residues is provided for microfluidic systems (e.g., lab-on-a-disk, for example). In some embodiments, hydrophobic and super-hydrophilic areas can be created on surfaces in the same material at different areas and positions merely by using different laser settings (e.g., spot size, wavelength, spacing, and/or pulse duration). Accordingly, capillary forces that are a recurrent issue in a microfluidic devices (e.g., a centrifugal microfluidic disk) can be controlled for practical applications, including, for example when users handle the disks and insert a sample, the moment the substrate/device (e.g., disk) is placed in a system (e.g., a centrifugal system), capillary forces can take place and move the fluids, which becomes a problem for sequential bioassays taking place in substrate/device (e.g., disk). Thus, in some embodiments, the systems, devices and methods increase fluid control in microfluidic devices.
DEVICE FOR INTRODUCING A PATTERN BY RADIATION ON A WOUND ENDLESS STRUCTURE
A device for introducing patterns by radiating a wound continuous substrate. The device provides patterning during continuous roll-to-roll movement without material slippage and with minimal distortion by providing a dancer roll between a processing drum and an unwinder roll on one side, and a winder roll on the other side, for tautly guiding the continuous substrate along a contact surface of at least half of the circumference of the processing drum in order to drive the continuous substrate without slippage. The dancer rolls are adapted to tautly guide the advancing substrate web and returning substrate web with a constant force, and an equilibrium is adjustable between a defined counterforce and the constant action of force on the dancer roll by a stabilization device, and is maintained constant by a controller based on measured deflections of the dancer roll by controlling the rotational speed of the unwinder and winder rolls.
Method and Device Using Femtosecond Laser to Prepare Nano-Precision Structure
A method using femtosecond laser for nano precision preparation. Initial damage nanoholes formed by using femtosecond laser multiphoton excitation are used as a seed structure, and the energy and polarization state of subsequent laser pulses are adjusted in real time, such that uniform and directional optical near-field enhancement is generated near the seed structure and finally the high-precision removal of machined materials is realized. Benefiting from the high localization of near-field spot energy in space, the method uses femtosecond laser pulses having the wavelength of 800 nm to achieve a machining accuracy having the minimum linewidth of only 18 nm, and the linewidth resolution reaches 1/40 of the wavelength; and the method using femtosecond laser for nano precision preparation does not need a vacuum environment, having good air/solution machining compatibility.
PULSED LASER PROCESSING OF MEDICAL DEVICES
Systems and methods are provided for generating microscale structures and/or nanoscale structures, surface profiles, and surface chemistries on medical devices. Embodiments disclosed herein utilize exposure of pulsed laser radiation on to a surface of a material by a pulsed laser. The pulsed laser according to embodiments disclosed herein is configured to emit at least one laser pulse toward the surface and thereby modify the profile of the surface in order to selectively promote or inhibit bioactivity and medical functionality of the material. By selectively promoting or inhibiting bioactivity of the material, enhanced biointegration at a cellular level may be achieved. For example, modifying the surface profile and/or surface chemistry of a first substrate material can improve adhesive and/or chemical bonding of the first material to a bioactive second coating material.
Method for manufacturing a decorative surface
A layer of lanthanum boride of stoichiometry LaB.sub.x where x is between 9 and 12 is deposited on substrate, for example a stainless steel watch dial, and subsequently treated with a laser, such that the portion(s) of the layer treated with the laser change colour according to the laser power. This produces multicoloured surfaces having high resistance to corrosion and abrasion. The layer of LaB.sub.x is deposited by PVD and by cathode sputtering, using a LaB.sub.6 target of purple-violet colour, such that the colour of the deposited layer differs from the colour of the target. The laser treatment at specific powers changes the stoichiometry of the layer in the treatment portions, such that the colour of these portions changes according to the stoichiometry obtained. At higher powers, the laser will remove the layer of LaB.sub.x. Thus the colour of the treated portions is determined by the material of the substrate.
