A tip-end part of the shoulder member is formed in a tapered shape.
INCREMENTAL SHEET FORMING SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR FORMING STRUCTURES HAVING STEEP WALLS
A system and method for forming a structure with steep walls (walls having an angle greater than 60° with respect to a level plane) through one or more incremental sheet forming operations is provided. The method includes a workpiece with an inner region and an outer region that are separated by a boundary region. The boundary region includes a plurality of openings and a plurality of connecting elements. The openings are cut into the workpiece using a boundary region cutting tool. A forming tool is configured to operate on the inner region after the boundary region cutting operation has been completed. At least one control unit is in communication with the forming tool. The at least one control unit operates the forming tool to form the structure from the inner region.
Dissimilar metal joint including flame-retardant magnesium alloy layer
Provided is a multimaterial joint material that contributes to multimaterialization and a reduction in weight of a transport apparatus, the multimaterial joint material being configured from: a flame-retardant magnesium alloy; and a metal or alloy selected from the group consisting of aluminum alloys, titanium alloys, stainless steel, and steel. This multimaterial joint material is such that two or more layers of different types of metal materials are joined, wherein the multimaterial joint material is characterized in that: of the two or more layers of metal materials, at least one layer comprises a flame-retardant magnesium alloy, and another layer comprises a metal or alloy selected from the group consisting of aluminum alloys, titanium alloys, stainless steel, and steel; and the two or more layers of metal materials are joined together across the entire surface of joining surfaces that overlap each other.
Friction stir welding tool and friction stir welding method
Provided are a long-life and inexpensive friction stir welding tool that is not dependent on the mode of friction stir welding or the type of material to be welded, and a friction stir welding method using the friction stir welding tool. The friction stir welding tool comprises a body portion having a shoulder portion, and a probe portion disposed on a bottom surface of the body portion, and is characterized in that the probe portion is spherical-crown shaped. Preferably, the shoulder portion is flat or convex, and preferably the hardness of the shoulder portion is greater than the hardness of the probe portion.
Method for adhesive bonding of titanium components using a fiber laser system
A method for treating a surface of a contoured titanium substrate used for adhesively bonded engine components. The method including applying energy from a fiber laser system to a contoured surface of a titanium substrate, the laser energy is distributed to the contoured titanium surface by at least one of direct light of sight, reflection, or scattering of one or more laser beam.
REINFORCING MEMBER FOR COLD FORMING AND PARTS MANUFACTURED USING SAME
A reinforcing member for cold forming according to an embodiment comprises: a blank member; and a reinforcing patch member provided to cover at least a portion of the blank member and coupled to the blank member by a plurality of welded portions, wherein the entire region of a heat-affected zone formed around the welded portions in the blank member is positioned in a region corresponding to the reinforcing patch member, and a heat-affected zone formed around a first welded portion from among the welded portions may contact the central point of a second welded portion adjacent to the first welded portion or may be formed to be spaced apart from the central point of the second welded portion.
System and method for ablation assisted nanostructure formation for graded index surfaces for optics
A system and method is disclosed for forming a graded index (GRIN) on a substrate. In one implementation the method may involve applying a metal layer to the substrate. A fluence profile of optical energy applied to the metal layer may be controlled to substantially ablate the metal layer to create a vaporized metal layer. The fluence profile may be further controlled to control a size of metal nanoparticles created from the vaporized metal layer as the vaporized metal layer condenses and forms metal nanoparticles, the metal nanoparticles being deposited back on the substrate to form a GRIN surface on the substrate.
FABRICATION OF THICK STOCK VIA DIFFUSION BONDING OF TITANIUM ALLOYS
A method for making a bonded metal piece, including (a) obtaining a first piece of stock metal comprising a first surface and a second piece of the stock metal comprising a second surface; (b) smoothing the first surface so as to form a first contact surface and smoothing the second surface so as to form a second contact surface; (c) cleaning the first contact surface and the second contact surface; (d) loading the first piece and the second piece into a furnace; and (e) bonding the first piece to the second piece so as to form a bonded metal piece comprising the first contact surface diffusion bonded to the second contact surface. The bonding includes (i) heating the first piece and the second piece to a temperature below a superplastic forming temperature of the stock metal; and (ii) applying a pressure comprising pressing the first contact surface and the second contact surface together while the first piece and the second piece are at the temperature. In one or more examples, the bonded metal piece is machined (without forging or working into shape) into an aircraft part.
Laser-produced porous surface
The present invention disclosed a method of producing a three-dimensional porous tissue in-growth structure. The method includes the steps of depositing a first layer of metal powder and scanning the first layer of metal powder with a laser beam to form a portion of a plurality of predetermined unit cells. Depositing at least one additional layer of metal powder onto a previous layer and repeating the step of scanning a laser beam for at least one of the additional layers in order to continuing forming the predetermined unit cells. The method further includes continuing the depositing and scanning steps to form a medical implant.
