Bi-material strip and a method of bonding strips of different materials together
A continuous hot bonding method for producing a bi-material strip with a strong bond therebetween is provided. The method comprises sanding a first strip formed of steel; and applying a layer of first particles, typically formed of copper, to the sanded first strip. The method next includes heating the first strip and the layer of the first particles, followed by pressing a second strip formed of an aluminum alloy onto the heated layer of the first particles. The aluminum alloy of the second strip includes tin particles, and the heat causes the second particles to liquefy and dissolve into the melted first particles. The first particles and the second particles bond together to form bond enhancing metal particles, which typically comprise bronze.
Resistance spot welding steel and aluminum workpieces with hot welding electrode at aluminum workpiece
A method of resistance spot welding a steel workpiece to an aluminum or aluminum alloy workpiece involves providing a workpiece stack-up that includes a steel workpiece and an aluminum workpiece and preheating the welding electrode that is meant to contact the aluminum or aluminum alloy workpiece. The method further involves pressing the preheated welding electrode and another welding electrode against opposite sides of the workpiece stack-up, with the preheated welding electrode abutting the aluminum or aluminum alloy workpiece, and passing an electrical current between the two welding electrodes at a weld site to initiate and grow a molten weld pool within the aluminum or aluminum alloy workpiece.
Method and system for additive manufacturing using high energy source and hot-wire
A method and system to manufacture workpieces employing a high intensity energy source to create a puddle and at least one resistively heated wire which is heated to at or near its melting temperature and deposited into the puddle as droplets.
System for evaluating weld quality using eddy currents
Electromagnetic and eddy current techniques for fast automated real-time and near real-time inspection and monitoring systems for high production rate joining processes. An eddy current system, array and method for the fast examination of welds to detect anomalies such as missed seam (MS) and lack of penetration (LOP) the system, array and methods capable of detecting and sizing surface and slightly subsurface flaws at various orientations in connection with at least the first and second weld pass.
Method and system for additive manufacturing using high energy source and hot-wire
A method and system to manufacture workpieces employing a high intensity energy source to create a puddle and at least one resistively heated wire which is heated to at or near its melting temperature and deposited into the puddle as droplets.
METHOD AND APPARATUS TO FORM A WORKPIECE EMPLOYING VIBRATION WELDING
A workpiece is described, and includes a substrate, a cable, and a cover piece. A portion of the cable is joined to the substrate employing a vibration welding tool, and the cover piece is interposed between the portion of the cable and the vibration welding tool during the joining.
RESISTANCE WELDING FASTENER, APPARATUS AND METHODS
An apparatus and method for fastening dissimilar materials like steel, plastic and aluminum. A resistance welding fastener having multiple layers may be used with or without a sealant. The fastener may be used to form an aluminum covered steel laminate via a hemming pattern of attachment. The fastener may have a solid shaft or have an extended reach and have features for interacting with the welding electrode. A variety of electrode tips may be employed to cooperate with the fastener.
Resistance Welding Fasteners, Apparatus and Methods for Joining Dissimilar Materials and Assessing Joints Made Thereby
An apparatus and method for method for joining materials includes a rivet that may extend through a first sheet to be resistance welded to a second sheet. The head of the rivet has a cavity and vents allowing adhesive extruded from a pilot hole to be received in the cavity and vented in a direction parallel to the first sheet. The rivet is deformed to an hourglass shape that fills the pilot hole and displaces the first sheet into the cavity. Rivet dimension allow for holding with a robotic gripper that can be withdrawn before welding. Methods of monitoring joint quality include comparing welding parameter profiles and images of good and discrepant joints.
JOINT STRUCTURE, JOINING METHOD, AND VEHICLE MEMBER
According to the present invention, provided are a joint structure (100) which joins a plurality of overlapped steel members (110, 120) using a connecting element (130) having a shaft portion (131), the joint structure including: a first steel member (110); and one or more of second steel members (120) overlapping the first steel member (110), in which the shaft portion (131) of the connecting element (130) is penetrated through the second steel member (120), and the shaft portion (131) of the connecting element (130) and the second steel member (120) are joined by friction welding, and the shaft portion (131) and the first steel member (110) are joined by friction welding, and a joining method for obtaining the joint structure.
EXTERNAL HEAT ASSISTED WELDING OF DISSIMILAR METAL WORKPIECES
A method of resistance spot welding a workpiece stack-up that includes an aluminum workpiece and an adjacent overlapping steel workpiece is disclosed. The method uses a first welding electrode positioned proximate the aluminum workpiece and a second welding electrode positioned proximate the steel workpiece to effectuate the spot welding process. In an effort to positively affect the strength of the ultimately-formed weld joint, external heat may be supplied to the first welding electrode by an external heating source disposed in heat transfer relation with the first welding electrode either before or after, or both before or after, an electrical current is passed between the first and second welding electrodes to create a molten aluminum weld pool within the aluminum workpiece.
