Cutting tool sharpener
09956662 · 2018-05-01 · ·

Method and apparatus for sharpening a cutting tool. In some embodiments, an abrasive endless belt is rotated in tension along a neutral plane between spaced apart first and second rollers. A guide assembly has spaced apart first and second guide surfaces which collectively converge to an intervening base surface to form a guide channel. Upon insertion of a blade of a cutting tool into the guide channel, a selected side of the blade contactingly slides against at least a selected one of the first or second guide surfaces and a first portion of a cutting edge of the blade contactingly engages the base surface to serve as a plunge depth limit stop for the blade. The endless belt is contactingly deflected by a second portion of the cutting edge away from the neutral plane to sharpen the second portion while the first portion remains in contact with the base surface.

Rotatable Edge Guide to Support a Cutting Tool During a Sharpening Operation

Apparatus for sharpening a cutting tool. In some embodiments, a tool sharpener includes an abrasive medium having an abrasive surface. A stationary tool support guide provides a guide surface that supports a side of the tool during presentation of a cutting edge of the tool against the abrasive surface. A rotatable edge guide has a roller member with a curvilinearly extending outer surface. The roller member is rotatable about an edge guide roller axis to engage, via rolling contact, the cutting edge during the presentation of the cutting edge against the abrasive surface.

Sharpening apparatus for scissors

A small and portable apparatus for sharpening the blades of a pair of scissors is provided according to the invention. The scissors sharpener comprises a main body; a vertically-oriented, stationary sharpening steel having opposed surfaces that is securely attached to the main body; a pivotable sharpening steel that rotates with respect to the main body; and a U-shaped return spring positioned between the main body and the pivotable sharpening steel. A user inserts a pair of scissors so that the inside surfaces of the two blades abut the opposed surfaces of the stationary sharpening steel for stable alignment, and closes the blades against the pivotable sharpening steel to cause it to travel along the blade cutting edges to sharpen them. When the scissors blades are disengaged from the scissors sharpening apparatus, the return spring will bias the pivotable sharpening steel back to its standby position.

The device and method of this disclosure provides for nipper sharpening by providing: a nipper device holding surface; a clamp for securing the nipper device to the holding surface; a sharpening strip holder coupled to a motor, wherein activation of the motor causes the sharpening strip holder to move between a first and second position; a sharpening strip having a roughened surface; wherein the placement of the sharpening strip in the strip holder causes the sharpening strip to contact the nipper device and wherein motor activation moves the sharpening strip across the area of the nipper device to be sharpened. A pivotably connected positioning magnet holds the sharpening strip in place through magnetic attraction to the metal nipper with sufficient magnetic force to secure the strip in place, but with light enough magnetic force to allow back and forth lateral movement of the strip across the nipper.
