Method for Polishing End Faces of Plastic Optical Fiber
20170336574 · 2017-11-23 · ·

A process for polishing the end face of a plastic optical fiber (POF) to produce a mirror smooth surface without any defect. Smooth POF end faces reduce the optical coupling loss when two plastic optical fibers are connected. The polishing process can be used to produce POF end faces which are recessed relative to the adjacent end face of a ferrule surrounding the fiber. When the ends of two ferrules are inserted in a connector designed to align the end faces of the ferrules while allowing those end faces to abut each other, the confronting recessed POF end faces will be separated by an air gap.

TELECOMMUNICATION ENCLOSURE HAVING INTEGRATED TERMINATION TOOLS

A communication enclosure is described that includes an enclosure body having a first body portion and a second body portion. An adapter mounting mechanism is disposed in the first body portion, and a connector adapter mounted into the mounting mechanism that is configured to accept an optical fiber connector. The enclosure includes at least one integrated tool for terminating field mountable optical fiber connectors wherein the at least one integrated tool is disposed on one of the first body portion and the second body portion. In an exemplary aspect, the at least one integrated tool is a connector polishing platform.

Optical fiber polishing fixture

A polishing fixture assembly comprises a fixture base, which has a ferrule aperture and a spring member, and a clamping assembly. The spring member comprises upper, middle, and lower springs. The upper spring forms a portion of a cam aperture. The middle spring is proximate the ferrule aperture. The clamping assembly has a clamp base, a lever, and a cam shaft. The clamp base is connected to the fixture base. The lever is pivotally connected to the clamp base and has unlocked and locked positions. The cam shaft is connected to the lever and rotates within the cam aperture when the lever pivots. As the lever is moved into the locked position, the cam shaft rotates, opposing narrower sides of the cam shaft contact the upper spring thereby flexing the middle spring and the lower spring so that the middle spring contacts a ferrule positioned in the ferrule aperture.

OPTICAL FIBER POLISHING FIXTURE

A method of connecting a ferrule to an optical fiber polishing fixture assembly comprises obtaining a fixture base to which a clamping assembly is operatively connected, positioning a lever in an unlocked position thereby creating a gap between first and second base portions, obtaining a fiber optic connector and cable assembly including a ferrule operatively connected to a cable, positioning the ferrule in a ferrule bore, and moving the lever from the unlocked position to a locked position thereby causing the first and second base portions to engage the fiber optic connector and cable assembly.

CHAMFERING OPTICAL FIBER
20210362286 · 2021-11-25 ·

A tool for chamfering cleaved tips of optical fibers. The tool including conical bores of relatively smooth and hard material terminate at a cylindrical bore that is slightly larger than the fiber core maximum diameter and a fiber centering bore that is slightly larger than the fiber coating maximum diameter. The tool provided such that when a cleaved fiber tip is inserted into the centering bore the sharp edge falls upon the chamfering surface that, when rotated relative to the fiber, gently grinds the edge to the chamfer angle. Chamfering cannot occur on the core face due to the absence of tool surface at this dimension.

FIBER OPTIC CONNECTOR FABRICATION CARRIER

A fabrication carrier for fiber optic connectors defines a body configured to removably hold a plurality of fiber optic ferrules. The body allows each of the fiber optic ferrules to be movable along its axis under a bias when the ferrules are mounted to the body. The body can be coupled to a polishing plate for use with a ferrule polishing apparatus in a polishing step. Coupling of the body to the polishing plate allows each of the ferrules to at least partially protrude past a bottom face of the polishing plate for contact with the polishing apparatus. The body of the fabrication carrier is configured as a fixture that can be used in at least one additional fabrication step aside from the polishing step when not mounted to the polishing plate.

End face polishing device for optical fiber ferrule

An end face polishing device for optical fiber ferrule for polishing an end face of an optical fiber ferrule by applying a polishing pressure between a polishing plate driven by a polishing drive shaft and an optical fiber ferrule held by a holding portion. The end face polishing device has: a bearing portion for allowing the polishing plate to rotate relatively around the polishing drive shaft and to move relatively to the polishing drive shaft in an axial direction; a polishing plate guide supporting portion for movably supporting the polishing plate on a base portion to apply the polishing pressure to the holding portion by allowing the polishing plate to move in the axial direction; a pressing drive source for outputting a driving force to apply the polishing pressure; and a pressing force transmission mechanism for transmitting the driving force output from the pressing drive source as a pressing force in the axial movement direction of the polishing plate.

Angle Polishing Systems and Methods for Multi-Ferrule Optical Connectors

Systems and methods for angle polishing of the end faces of a plurality of optical connectors are provided. Systems are provided that include a connector defining a longitudinal axis, and at least two ferrules mounted with respect to the connector and arranged in a side-by-side orientation. The end faces of the connectors are movable relative to the connector and such movement facilitates lateral orientation of the angle polished end faces of the ferrules relative to the connector when in the mating position. Various mechanisms and methods for facilitating movement of the ferrules relative to the connector are disclosed to achieve the desired lateral polish orientation of the ferrule end faces.
