A surface treatment tool according to the present disclosure can include a lathe assembly having a lathe chuck for receiving a component thereon, wherein the lathe chuck rotates the component about a first axis of rotation, and wherein the component includes an exposed axial target surface; and a sander or burnishing tool coupled to the lathe assembly and including a sanding or burnishing surface thereon, coupled to a drive system, wherein the sanding or burnishing surface is oriented along a second axis substantially non-parallel with the first axis of rotation, such that the sanding or burnishing surface selectively contacts the target surface of the component to yield a polished target surface.

Then the outer layer of the treated substrate is subject to chemical mechanical polishing to planarize and reduce a thickness of the outer layer.

A jig that is used when the processing tool is to be mounted on the mount includes a first support for supporting the processing tool thereon, a second support positioned below the first support and supported on the seat structure, and a main body disposed between the first support and the second support. The main body includes a balloon that is expandable when gas is introduced thereinto and that is collapsible when the gas is discharged therefrom. The balloon with the processing tool supported on the first support is able to be expanded to move the processing tool toward the mount.

A workpiece holding assembly comprises a magnetic chuck, and first and second separate sets of workrests for engaging with the outer circumferential surface of an annular workpiece. The workrests are configurable such that when the outer circumferential surface of the workpiece is ground with the chuck rotating in one direction, the outer circumferential surface is only urged in contact with the first set of workrests, and when an inner circumferential surface of said workpiece is ground with the direction of rotation of the chuck reversed, the outer circumferential surface is only urged in contact with the second set of workrests. Grinding methods using such a workpiece holding assembly are also described.

The measuring means and the dispensing means, are enclosed by a housing having a contact surface for contacting the surface of the polishing pad. The present invention also relates to a device for polishing a specimen and a method for moistening a polishing pad.
