A method and apparatus for processing a metallic workpiece with defined edges (e.g., a gear) comprises media blasting of the workpiece by directing a first media against exposed surfaces on the workpiece to increase the root strength of the gear, the blasting causing the defined edges to be radiused or mushroomed, ceasing the media blasting, loading the workpiece into a finishing apparatus, and subjecting the workpiece to a finishing process with a second media, the exposed surfaces on the workpiece being subjected to the finishing process to reduce the radiused edges on the workpiece created from the media blasting. The process of moving the workpiece to the spindle-finishing apparatus from the media blasting may be performed automatically by a machine. Once the workpiece has been subjected to the finishing process with the second media, it may be removed from the spindle-finishing machine, washed, and rinsed with rust inhibitor whereby wear properties of the workpiece are enhanced.

A polishing system and method for polishing a channel formed within a component is disclosed. The polishing system may include a tooling element operable to be positioned within a recess formed partially through a component. The tooling element may include an outer surface having a geometry corresponding to a geometry of the recess formed in the component. The tooling element forms a channel between the recess of the component and the tooling element when positioned in the recess. The system may also include a first member in fluid communication with a first opening of the channel, and a second member in fluid communication with a second opening of the channel. The second opening may be in fluid communication with the first opening via the channel. Additionally, the first and second member may be configured to continuously vary a pressure within the channel to move an abrasive slurry within the channel.

A third one of the nozzles ejects the treating material substantially along a third line substantially perpendicular to the first and second lines. The treating material ejected from the first one intersects with the treating material ejected from the second one at a first intersection area to radially deflect to form a first radial spray. The treating material ejected from the third one intersects with the first radial spray at a second intersection area to form a second radial spray of treating material. The interior surface of the workpiece adjacent the second intersection area is treated with the treating material of the second radial spray.

A method of manufacturing a last chance screen for an aircraft engine includes forming an array of holes through a metal sheet with a wire electrode using electrical discharge machining. The array of holes comprises a plurality of holes. Each hole of the plurality of holes comprises a first end and a second end and is surrounded by a wall section such that the last chance screen is defined by the plurality of holes and the plurality of wall sections. The first and second end of each hole are widened by either applying a flow of an abrasive flow medium to the array of holes in two directions or using a conical sinker electrode on either side of the metal sheet. Shaping the first and second end of each hole results in an airfoil-shaped cross-section of each wall section.
