Systems and methods include providing a coated abrasive article with a substrate formed from a plurality of hygroscopic fibers, an abrasive layer comprising a make coat, a size coat, a supersize coat, or combinations thereof disposed on a first side of substrate, and an anti-curl layer disposed on a second side of the substrate. The polymer-based anti-curl layer allows the coated abrasive article to achieve a change in curl between −5 millimeters and 25 millimeters, the change in curl being expressed as the curl of the coated abrasive article in millimeters at 90% relative humidity minus the curl of the coated abrasive article in millimeters at 20% relative humidity. The coated abrasive article exhibits substantially no loss of grinding performance, burst speed, or a combination thereof as compared to coated abrasive articles free of the anti-curl layer.
ABRASIVE ARTICLE WITH ANIONIC WATER SOLUBILIZING MATERIAL AND METHOD OF MAKING
An abrasive article includes backing material, binder comprising an anionic water solubilizing material provided on at least a portion of the backing material and abrasive particles provided on at least a portion of the backing material. A method of making such an abrasive article comprises the steps of providing a backing material, applying a first binder containing an anionic water solubilizing material to the backing material, and applying abrasive particles to the backing material.
COATED ABRASIVE ARTICLE AND METHOD OF MAKING THE SAME
A method of making a coated abrasive article is disclosed. A backing has first and second opposed major surfaces. A make layer precursor is disposed on at least a portion of the first major surface. Magnetizable abrasive particles are disposed onto the make layer precursor while under the influence of an applied magnetic field. At least a majority the magnetizable abrasive particles extend away from the make layer precursor in an orientation substantially aligned with the applied magnetic field. Non-magnetizable particles are then disposed onto the make layer precursor while under the influence of the applied magnetic field. At least some of the non-magnetizable particles are disposed between the magnetizable abrasive particles. Then, the make layer precursor is at least partially cured to provide a make layer.
METHOD OF MAKING A COATED ABRASIVE ARTICLE
A method of applying magnetizable particles onto an adherent web includes several steps. Step a) provides a magnetizable particle coating apparatus comprising a downward sloping dispensing surface at least partially disposed within an applied magnetic field. Step b) disposes an adherent web between upper and lower magnetic members and beneath the downward sloping dispensing surface, wherein the web comprises a backing having a curable binder precursor layer disposed on a major surface thereof. Step c) disposes magnetizable particles onto at least a portion of the downward sloping dispensing surface within the applied magnetic field, and subsequently disposed onto the curable binder precursor layer while the adherent web is advanced from an upweb position to a downweb position. Step d) at least partially cures the curable binder precursor layer to fix the orientations of the magnetizable particles.

A surface modified abrasive particle may include a core abrasive particle and a coating functionally connected to a surface of the core abrasive particle. The core abrasive particle may have a median particle size of at least about 0.06 microns. The coating may include a compound selected from the group consisting of dopamine, tyrosine, dihydroxyphenylalanine, norepinephrine, epinephrine, normetanephrine, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid, tannic acid, pyrogallic acid or combinations thereof.

A first layer of abrasive particles is dispersed within the abrasive article according to a first predetermined pattern. Further a second layer of abrasive particles spaced apart from the first layer of abrasive particles and is dispersed within the abrasive article along a according to a second predetermined pattern. A binder material retains the first and second layers of abrasive particles in the abrasive article. A portion of the binder material is located between the first and second layers of abrasive particles. That portion of the binder material is substantially continuous.

Further a second layer of abrasive particles spaced apart from the first layer of abrasive particles and is dispersed within the abrasive article along a according to a second predetermined pattern. A binder material retains the first and second layers of abrasive particles in the abrasive article. A portion of the binder material is located between the first and second layers of abrasive particles. That portion of the binder material is substantially continuous.
