The anvil surface is in contact with the staple cartridge when the second jaw is in the first clamped position. The staples are configured to be formed against the staple-forming pockets when the second jaw is in the second clamped position. The anvil surface and the staple cartridge are not in contact with each other when the second jaw is in the second clamped position.

Surgical instrument assembly

A surgical instrument assembly comprising a shaft assembly and an end effector is disclosed. The shaft assembly comprises a firing system and a closure system comprising a closing cam. The firing system comprises a first camming member and a second camming member. The closure system is separate and distinct from the firing system. The end effector comprises a first jaw, a second jaw, a cartridge body, and a metal staple matrix. The second jaw is movable relative to the first jaw when a closing motion is applied to the second jaw by the closure cam during a closing stroke. The first jaw is configured to be engaged by the first camming member and the second jaw is configured to be engaged by the second camming member during a staple firing stroke. The metal staple matrix comprises a plurality of staples and a metal staple-connecting member interconnecting the staples.

A surgical instrument assembly comprising a handle, a shaft, and an end effector is disclosed. The end effector comprises a first iaw comprising a tissue-supporting surface defining a plurality of staple cavities defined therein, a second iaw movable relative to the first jaw, a proximal pin coupling the first and second jaws, a first slot configured to receive the proximal pin, a distal pin coupling the jaw and second jaws, and a second slot configured to receive the distal pin. The proximal pin is movable vertically within the first slot. The distal pin is actuatable within the second slot between a first position where the second jaw is in an open position, a second position where the second jaw is in a clamped position, and a third position where the second jaw is in a fully closed position and the second iaw is in contact with the tissue-supporting surface.

ADHESIVE FILM LAMINATE

A surgical stapler, or fastening instrument, may generally comprise a layer, such as a tissue thickness compensator, for example, releasably attached to a fastener cartridge and/or anvil by a flowable attachment portion. The flowable attachment portion may be indefinitely flowable. The flowable attachment portion may be flowable from the time that layer is installed to the fastener cartridge to the time in which the layer is implanted to patient tissue. The flowable attachment portion may comprise a pressure sensitive adhesive. The flowable attachment portion may comprise an adhesive laminate comprising a base layer comprising the tissue thickness compensator and an adhesive layer on at least a portion of a surface of the base layer comprising the pressure sensitive adhesive. Articles of manufacture comprising flowable attachment portion and methods of making and using the flowable attachment portion are also described.

Anvil layer attached to a proximal end of an end effector

An anvil-attachable layer for use with a surgical stapler, or fastening instrument, wherein a proximal end portion of the layer is attached to a staple cartridge assembly, for example. The layer may be attached to the staple cartridge assembly by an adhesive, weld, or a staple-cartridge-based clamp, wherein the attachment is weak enough to allow the layer to pull away from the staple cartridge assembly with stapled tissue. Alternatively, the layer can include two or more lateral slits that define a connector region that can be cut by a knife of a surgical stapler to release the layer.

Staple cartridge comprising multiple regions
