A trimming assembly for dreadlocks comprises a handle. A cutting head is operatively connected to the handle. The cutting head comprises a cutting head body defining a receptacle at a radial end thereof. The receptacle is structured to receive a dreadlock. A blade protector is positioned axially within the receptacle. A curvature of the blade protector corresponds to a curvature of an inner wall of the receptacle. A blade is interposed between the blade protector and the inner wall. The blade defines a cutting edge at an axial end thereof proximate to the handle. The cutting edge is structured to cut loose hair protruding outwards from the dreadlock as the cutting head is moved along the dreadlock.

The blade retention assembly is movably coupled with the transport carriage and is movable with respect to the material support table between a blade-engaged position and a blade disengaged position. The blade retention assembly is movable together with the transport carriage between the start position and the end position. The blade is releasably attached to the blade retention assembly. The razor blade contacts the material sample when the blade retention assembly is in the blade-engaged position. Methods are also provided.

The frame unit comprises a frame (110, 310, 610, 710); a first ear portion (120, 320, 620, 720) for supporting the frame at the first ear of the subject; at least one of a nose portion (140, 340, 640, 740) for supporting the frame on the nose of the subject and a second ear portion (130, 330, 630) for supporting the frame at the second ear of the subject. The frame interconnects the first ear portion and the at least one of the nose portion and the second ear portion. Also, the frame extends below a line interconnecting the first ear portion and the at least one of the nose portion and the second ear portion while in use on a subject so as to enable access to the side of the face of the subject by a hair clipping unit.

There is provided a method of manufacturing a cutting element for use in a hair cutting device, the cutting element comprising an optical waveguide, the method comprising providing a preform for an optical waveguide, the preform comprising a core and an outer layer, wherein the outer layer is arranged around the core along the length of the core; forming a shaped preform by removing a portion of the outer layer along the length of the core to expose part of the core, wherein a remaining portion of the outer layer is a support structure for the core; heating the shaped preform; and pulling the shaped preform in the direction of the axis of the core to reduce the cross-section of the shaped preform and form the optical waveguide. Also provided is a cutting element manufactured according to the above method and a cutting element for use in a hair cutting device, the cutting element comprising an optical waveguide comprising a core and a support structure, wherein the support structure contacts the core along the length of the core to support the core, and wherein part of the core is exposed along the length of the core to form a cutting face for contacting hair. The thickness of the support structure tapers linearly or non-linearly from a thin side at which the support structure contacts the core to a thick side.
