The present disclosure relates to Oxygen Reduction Disposable kits (ORDKit), devices and methods for the improved preservation of whole blood and blood components. The improved devices and methods for the collection of blood and blood components provide for whole blood and blood components having reduced levels of oxygen. The devices and methods provide for the rapid preparation of deoxygenated blood and blood components for storage that improves the overall quality of the transfused blood and improves health outcomes in patients.

Systems And Methods For Collecting Mononuclear Cells

Fluid processing assemblies and methods are provided for mononuclear cell collection. Mononuclear cells are separated from red blood cells in a blood separation chamber, with the mononuclear cells and then the red blood cells exiting the chamber via an outlet port. The mononuclear cells and then the red blood cells enter an outlet flow path that is in fluid communication with a mononuclear cell collection container. The outlet flow path includes a visual indicium, which an operator may use to determine the position of the red blood cells within the outlet flow path and when to end mononuclear cell collection by preventing fluid communication between the outlet flow path and the mononuclear cell collection container.

The clamping element is able to move between an open position in which the flexible tube positioned between the bearing and clamping surfaces is not deformed and a closed position in which the flexible tube positioned between the bearing and clamping surfaces is closed off. The device also has a control unit configured to determine the volume of blood collected and move the clamping element from the open position to an intermediate position, when the determined volume of blood collected reaches a predetermined volume.

The syringe comprises a substantially transparent barrel, a substantially transparent, elongated delineation neck, a plunger for drawing blood into and expelling blood from the barrel, and an adapter attached to the neck for enabling releasable connection of a selected device over an inlet/outlet opening in the neck. The delineation neck extends away from a distal end of the barrel. The barrel and the neck have respective axial bores in fluid flow communication with each other, the cross sectional area of the bore in the delineation neck being substantially less than the cross sectional area of the bore in the barrel. The selected device may be one of various devices including a capping device sealing the inlet/outlet opening of the neck, a needle device used during withdrawal of blood from a subject through the neck, or a hose device used to carry away delineated blood fractions from the syringe through the neck.

A method for collecting plasma includes determining the weight and hematocrit of a donor, and inserting a venous-access device into the donor. The method then withdraws blood from the donor through a draw line connected to a blood component separation device, and introduces anticoagulant into the withdrawn blood. The blood component separation device separates the blood into a plasma component and a second blood component, and the plasma component is collected from the blood component separation device and into a plasma collection container. The method may then calculate (1) a percentage of anticoagulant in the collected plasma component, and (2) a volume of pure plasma collected within the plasma collection container. The volume of pure plasma may be based, at least in part, on the calculated percentage of anticoagulant. The method may continue until a target volume of pure plasma is collected within the plasma collection container.
