PARTIAL CURING OF THERMOSET COMPOSITES
Composite laminate structures are produced using partially cured parts. Partial curing of the parts is achieved by applying a catalyst to regions of the parts that are to be fully cured. These regions cure at a lower-than-normal temperature while remaining regions of the part remain uncured, allowing them to be co-bonded or co-cured to other structures.
THERMALLY EXPANDABLE SHEET PRODUCTION METHOD AND SHAPED OBJECT PRODUCTION METHOD
A thermally expandable sheet includes: a first thermally expansive layer that is formed on one side of a base and contains a first thermally expandable material; and a second thermally expansive layer that is formed on the first thermally expansive layer and contains a second thermally expandable material, wherein the second thermally expandable material further contains white pigment.
Method and apparatus for volumetric manufacture of composite objects
A method and apparatus for volumetric manufacture of three-dimensional physical objects from a precursor material based on plans, specifications, or virtual models. A build domain is provided comprising an enclosed three-dimensional wire grid in which the wires are connected to one or more electric power sources configured to controllably and addressably apply power to one or more individual wires to cause the wires to dissipate heat produced by Joule heating to the surrounding precursor material situated within the build domain, and to further allow for the control of the three-dimensional heat distribution and accordingly temperature distribution within the build domain. By activating and deactivating one or more predetermined subsets of the wires in the build domain, the precursor can be caused to melt and/or solidify so as to form a three-dimensional object within the build domain.
Manufacturing method and inspection method of tow prepreg
A manufacturing method of a tow prepreg, comprising: an impregnation process of impregnating a reinforcement fiber with an anhydrous epoxy resin to obtain a tow prepreg; and a process of irradiating a specific surface of the tow prepreg with laser beam to cure the epoxy resin on the specific surface.
THERMALLY EXPANDABLE SHEET PRODUCTION METHOD AND SHAPED OBJECT PRODUCTION METHOD
A thermally expandable sheet includes: a first thermally expansive layer that is formed on one side of a base and contains a first thermally expandable material and a first binder, the first thermally expansive layer having a first ratio of the first thermally expandable material with respect to the first binder; and a second thermally expansive layer that is formed on the first thermally expansive layer and contains a second thermally expandable material and a second binder, the second thermally expansive layer having a second ratio of the second thermally expandable material with respect to the second binder, wherein the first ratio is lower than the second ratio.
ADDITIVE MANUFACTURED PARTS WITH SMOOTH SURFACE FINISHES
Methods of producing an additive manufactured part with a smooth surface finish include providing a spinning device that has a platform. The part is secured to the platform, where the part is at least partially wetted with uncured resin from a resin pool. The platform is rotated, where a first portion of the uncured resin is retained on the part and a second portion of the uncured resin is removed. The part is cured after the rotating. In some embodiments, methods include creating a compensated design for a part by modifying a desired design to compensate for a first portion of an uncured surface finish material to be retained on the part, and forming the part with an additive manufacturing process according to the compensated design.
METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR FORMING HOLES WITHIN AN UNCURED COMPOSITE SHEET, AND METHOD FOR FORMING A COMPOSITE STRUCTURE
A method for forming holes within an uncured composite sheet includes perforating the uncured composite sheet with a plurality of pins of a metallic pin mat and heating the plurality of pins to heat portions of the uncured composite sheet surrounding each pin.
Pre-polymerized thermosetting composite part and methods for making such a part
A part made of a fiber-reinforced composite material includes a structure made from a set of fibers supported in a thermosetting resin and a peel ply across all or part of the outer surface of the structure. The part has a gradient of polymerization at the interface between the structure and the peel ply. Also, methods for making such a part and methods for bonding such parts.
Thermally expandable sheet and thermally expandable sheet production method
A thermally expandable sheet includes: a first thermally expansive layer that is formed on one side of a base and contains a first thermally expandable material; and a second thermally expansive layer that is formed on the first thermally expansive layer and contains a second thermally expandable material, wherein the second thermally expandable material further contains white pigment.
FORMABLE RESIN SHEET, PRODUCTION METHOD FOR FORMABLE RESIN SHEET, SHAPED OBJECT AND PRODUCTION METHOD FOR SHAPED OBJECT
A production method for a shaped object includes preparing a formable resin sheet that includes a base made from a resin, and a thermally expansive layer provided on a first side of the base and containing a thermally expandable material, a thermal conversion layer forming step of forming a thermal conversion layer that contains an electromagnetic wave heat conversion material that converts electromagnetic waves to heat on a first side of the formable resin sheet, an electrically conductive layer forming step of forming an electrically conductive layer on a second side of the formable resin sheet, and an irradiating step of, after forming the thermal conversion layer and the electrically conductive layer, irradiating the thermal conversion layer with the electromagnetic waves to cause the thermal expansive layer to distend and cause the base to deform in accordance with the distension of the thermal expansive layer. The thermal conversion layer and the electrically conductive layer are formed such that at least a portion of the electrically conductive layer is opposite at least a portion of the thermal conversion layer, with the base and the thermally expansive layer interposed therebetween.
