Described herein are methods for increasing strength of blown films, by forming the films using a film blowing apparatus where the film is formed from a blend of a first polymeric material and a renewable carbohydrate-based polymeric material having particular characteristics. By using such a blend, and ensuring that the film blowing apparatus is operated at a high blow up ratio of at least 2.0, and/or using a narrow die gap of no more than 500 microns, Applicant has discovered that increased strength in the film can be obtained, as compared to where (i) the renewable carbohydrate-based polymeric material is not included or (ii) where the film is blown at lower blow up ratios and/or wider die gaps.

Oriented Films Comprising Ethylene-Based Polymers and Methods of Making the Same

Provided are oriented films comprising linear low density polyethylene polymer and having improved balance of properties including improved machine direction tear strength. The oriented polymer film has at least one layer comprising 50 to 100 wt. % of an ethylene-based polymer. The MDO polymer film has a normalized MD Elmendorf Tear (ASTM D-1922) of at least 40 g/m. In certain embodiments, the MDO polymer film surprisingly does not tear when MD Elmendorf Tear is measured according to ASTM D-1922.

Paper-like film and process for making it

A micro-voided film comprising high density polyethylene having a molecular weight of at least about 200,000, and low aspect ratio filler having a mean particle size from about 1 to about 25 microns. The film has a thickness of from about 10 to about 75 microns and a void fraction of from about 0.60 to about 0.75. The micro-voided film is made by a process comprising extruding the composition into a film having a thickness of from about 50 to about 300 microns, and orienting the extruded film using a high stalk, blown film process. The process produces a stabilized high stalk for increasing the production rate of blown, high molecular weight polyethylene, while increasing the film's physical and mechanical properties. The high stalk can be stabilized by application of high velocity, low volume flow rate of air over the interior and exterior surfaces of the extruded film.

Retroreflector

A retroreflector includes a regular arrangement of multiple reflective triples of the first type, each having three side surfaces of the first type, which triples stand approximately perpendicular to one another, in pairs, and define a cube corner having an apex, at which the planes spanned by the three side surfaces of the first type intersect. A number of selected triples of the first type each have a recess, in particular a cube-shaped recess in the surface of the related cube corner and/or an elevation, in particular a cube-shaped elevation projecting from the surface of the related cube corner, which forms a triple of the second type, wherein the triples of the second type each have at least three side surfaces of the second type, which stand approximately perpendicular to one another, in pairs.
