Composite structures for packaging articles and related methods
The composite structure includes a fiber-containing layer, such as a fiberboard layer or other layer having fibers from natural and/or synthetic sources, and a mineral-containing layer covering the fiber-containing layer. The fiber-containing layer and mineral-containing layer can be shaped, sized and manufactured such that the composite structure formed therefrom is capable of being machined to form a storage article. The composite structure has advantages in that it can improve whiteness, opacity, ink adhesion, materials reduction, barrier properties, recyclability, and printability. The composite can reduce polymer mass requirements for heat seal, barrier, and fiber adhesion. Further improvements include economics, pliability, and flexibility that is increased over the pliability of the fiber-containing layer alone.

Device for processing, in particular for ultrasound welding, of packaging sleeves
A device for processing, in particular for ultrasound welding, of packaging sleeves and/or packagings includes at least two tools for processing, in particular for ultrasound welding, of packaging sleeves. Each tool has an operating region. The tools are supported in such a manner that there is produced between the operating regions a gap whose longitudinal direction corresponds to the transport direction of the packaging sleeves, and the tools are supported in such a manner that the size of the gap can be changed. In order also to enable continuous welding of the packaging sleeves in a reliable manner with changing material thicknesses, there is provided at least one parallel spring on which at least one of the tools is movably supported transversely relative to the transport direction of the packaging sleeves.
SYSTEM AND METHOD TO MANAGE AND SHARE MANAGED RUNTIME MEMORY FOR JAVA VIRTUAL MACHINE
A method and system for self-regulating memory of a JAVA virtual machine optimizes memory use by the JVM and by an operating system. A computer running a garbage collector extension monitors and records free committed memory of the JVM at predetermined intervals over time to define a historical record. The computer calculates an average allocation of the free committed memory in the historical record over predetermined intervals. An allocation rate is determined, wherein the allocation rate is based on the average allocation over the predetermined intervals. The computer calculates an estimated time to exhaust committed memory based on free committed heap memory and the allocation rate. Memory is recovered from the operating system if the time to exhaust committed memory is below a first predetermined threshold value and is released to the operating system when said time to exhaust committed memory is above a second predetermined threshold value.
Plastic bag making apparatus
An apparatus successively makes plastic bags each of which includes an end surface provided with a protrusion, without specially supplying a web of bottom gusset material. A first web of panel material is folded along a first folded line at a position adjacent to a side edge of the first web, while a second web of panel material is folded along a second folded line at a position adjacent to a corresponding side edge of the second web. A first folded portion is formed in the first web. There exists a distance between the side edge and the first folded line, which is larger than twice a distance between the corresponding side edge and the second folded line by a predetermined distance, after being folded. The end surface is formed by the first folded portion, the protrusion being formed by the predetermined distance.

Apparatuses and methods for producing containers
The apparatus includes an operating unit, which can be a welding unit for welding a closing film to an edge zone of a containing element or a separating unit for separating containing elements from portions of sheet material. The apparatus includes a control unit programmed to enable the operating unit to selectively process a continuous strip of containing elements or discrete groups of containing elements.
