First and second welding jaws weld the first sheet and the second sheet to close two sides of the bag and leave a third side of the bag open. A filling chute fills the bag by the third side of the bag. Third welding jaws close the bag by sealing the third side.

The method and apparatus further include an automated compensating device that cooperates at least indirectly with the detectors. The compensating device reduces any variations in position along the length of the web of material between at least one of said first locations and/or said second locations.
