Crumpling mechanism for creating dunnage

A dunnage crumpling apparatus is provided having first and second entry-side crumpling members and first and second exit-side crumpling members. The first and second entry-side crumpling members define an entry therebetween. The first and second exit-side crumpling members define an exit therebetween that is disposed along the longitudinal path downstream of the entry. A crumpling zone being defined between the entry and exit. The first entry-side crumpling member is configured for moving at an first rate and is associated with the second entry-side crumpling member for moving sheet material through the entry in a first direction along a longitudinal path at an entry rate. The first exit-side crumpling member is configured for moving at an second rate and is associated with the second exit-side crumpling member for moving the sheet material through the exit in the first direction along the path at a exit rate that is slower than the entry rate to crumple the sheet material for producing dunnage. The entry and exit-side crumpling members are displaced laterally along the path with respect to each other to cause shearing of the sheet within the crumpling zone.

FORMING ASSEMBLY FOR A DUNNAGE CONVERSION MACHINE, DUNNAGE CONVERSION MACHINE AND PRE-PREPARED SHEET STOCK MATERIAL

A cushioning conversion machine converts a sheet stock material into a relatively lower-density cushioning dunnage product. An exemplary sheet stock material includes two sheets that each overlap a common side of another sheet and are connected to respective lateral edges of the other sheet. The conversion machine includes a forming assembly having a former for shaping and randomly crumpling the sheet material, a set of adjustable guide members to guide the crumpled sheet material to a feeding assembly downstream of the forming assembly, and a severing assembly downstream of the feeding assembly that separates discrete lengths of cushioning. The severing assembly includes a window frame passage that guides the crumpled sheet material to an outlet during operation of the feeding assembly and constrains the crumpled sheet stock material during operation of the severing assembly.

A packing material including a plurality of discrete cushioning elements and methods for making the same. The discrete cushioning elements may be cellulosic cushioning elements. A flexible linkage may connect the plurality of discrete cushioning elements in the packing material. The packing material may also include a bottom cellulosic sheet connected to a top cellulosic sheet with the plurality of cellulosic cushioning elements positioned between the top cellulosic sheet and the bottom cellulosic sheet. The packing material may also be a molded packing material that includes bonds comprising adhesive and cellulosic fibers. The adhesive and cellulosic fibers of the bonds may be dispersed between the folds of each of the cellulosic cushioning elements.

Dunnage system with variable accumulator

A dunnage handler for controlling the outfeed of dunnage from a dunnage machine is disclosed and can include a dunnage accumulator with first and second holding portions configured and associated with each other to define a dunnage accumulation space therebetween and for receiving and removably retaining the dunnage in the accumulation space from a dunnage machine and an articulation associating the first and second holding portions such that the holding portions are movable with respect to each other to vary the accumulation space to accommodate a varying amount of dunnage held therein, where a sensor and controller can be included to stop dunnage production when the accumulator is full.

A device (1) for dispensing a cushioning and packaging element from at least one strip of paper includes at least two guides (2) around which at least one strip of paper is wound. The device (1) also includes at least one drive element for driving the at least one strip of paper. The device (1) further includes at least one creasing device (4) for creasing the at least one strip of paper. The guides (2) extend beyond the at least one creasing device (4), downstream of the at least one creasing device (4).

PACKAGING MATERIAL WITH EXPANDING LAYER AND PACKAGING ENCLOSURE FORMED THEREWITH
20220143946 · 2022-05-12 · ·

A packaging material including one or more expandable layers that provide protection to contents of a packaging enclosure formed with the packaging material. The packaging material includes at least a first layer and a second layer bonded to one another. The first layer is pulled or extended in a first direction that is effective to cause the second layer to expand in a second direction. The second layer is a cut-patterned layer which creates structural strength in the packaging material when expanded.

3D SHAPED PACKAGING PRODUCT FROM AN AIR-LAID BLANK
20230249890 · 2023-08-10 · ·

A 3D shaped packaging product (20) for cushioning and/or thermal insulation of packaged goods is formed by hot pressing at an average pressure equal to or below 200 kPa of an air-laid blank (10) comprising natural fibers at a concentration of at least 70% by weight of the air-laid blank (10) and a thermoplastic polymer binder at a concentration selected within an interval of from 4 up to 30% by weight of the air-laid blank (10). The 3D shaped packaging product (20) has a density that is less than four times a density of the air-laid blank (10) and the density of the 3D shaped packaging product (20) is selected within an interval of from 15 to 240 kg/m.sup.3. The 3D shaped packaging product (20) maintains at least a significant portion of the porosity of the air-laid blank (10) even after hot pressing and therefore provides excellent shock absorbing and damping properties and thermal insulation.

Extensible paper and its use in the production of expanded slit packaging wrap and void fill products
11760548 · 2023-09-19 ·

An extensible slit sheet paper product is produced having an expandable slit pattern that forms open cells upon expansion of the paper product. The paper product is an extensible paper having an extensibility in the range from 1-9% in the machine direction and 1-5% in the cross direction. The expansion produces an array of hexagonal cells. The expanded extensible paper can be used to wrap an object for shipping by wrapping and cushioning the object in the expanded slit sheet material. The extensible, expandable slit sheet paper can be wrapped around itself to produce a void fill product.
