In particular, the sealing apparatus provides improved sealing through the improved accuracy of the temperature reading in the heating zone, in part, by locating a sensor between a heating element and a protective member that covers the sensor.

An inflatable packaging material includes two outer films, a plurality of valve films, and a non-sealable material positioned between the valve films. The films are sealed together by a plurality of seals, including a valve seal extending across the material. The seals define a plurality of air columns and an inflation passage in communication with the columns. The non-sealable material is arranged to form valve portions positioned along the valve seal and spaced passage portions positioned along the inflation passage. The valve portions provide valve passages through the valve seal, to allow airflow into each air column. The passage portions are arranged such that one side seal passes through a space between the passage portions to seal one end of the inflation passage, and the other side seal passes through one of the passage portions to create an open inflation port. The valve films allow air to pass through from the inflation passage to the columns, and prevent reverse flow of air from the columns into the inflation passage.

An inflatable protective packaging unit and associated inflation systems are disclosed. The unit can include an inflatable component that includes overlaid flexible plies connected to each other to define a fluid chamber therebetween. The inflatable component can define an inflation region in fluid communication with the fluid chamber to allow fluid from the inflation region into the fluid chamber. The unit can further include a receiver separably attached to the inflatable component at the inflation region and configured to direct fluid into the inflation region. The inflation system can be configured to discretely engage the inflatable protective packaging unit and provide fluid for inflation. Once inflated, the system may eject the unit, and cause the inflatable component to separate from the receiver.

A machine for automatically inflating air cushions. The cushions have two plastic walls (21; 22) joined together around their periphery to define a closed space. The machine comprises a source of gas under pressure, and two jaws (1; 2) arranged such that they can move on a supporting structure. Each one of the jaws consists of a body (1; 3) each having a plane face (4; 10) of substantially the same shape and surface area, it being possible for the faces to mate against one another in order to clamp between them the walls (21; 22) of a cushion. Each jaw comprises an aspiration channel (6; 7) opening onto its planer face. A first jaw on the inside of its body has a hollow needle (5) able to move relative to the body and capable in a certain position of having its pointed tip outside of the surface of the plane face. A second jaw within its body has a heating element (18) capable, when the two jaws are clamping between them the two walls of a cushion, of heat-welding the two walls together over a certain proportion of their contacting surface.

A protective packaging formation device is disclosed herein. The device includes an inflation assembly that directs fluid between first and second overlapping plies of a web material. The device also includes a sealing mechanism that includes an arcuate web-support surface. The web-support surface includes a heater that defines a heating zone that is operable to heat the plies to create a longitudinal heat seal that seals the first and second plies together as the web is driven over the heating zone in a downstream direction. The web-support surface also includes a cooling zone disposed downstream of the heating zone operable to allow the heated plies to cool at the longitudinal heat seal as the web is driven over the heating zone in a downstream direction, such that the cooled longitudinal heat seal retains the fluid between the plies.

The web also includes a second film web sealed to the first film web around a portion of the open base region to form sub-chambers on a side of the first film web opposite the protruding direction. The first film web and the second film web remain unsealed across the open base region defining regions within the sub-chambers suitable to contain a fluid volume. The plurality of sub-chambers are interconnected via one or more intra-chamber channels, allowing each of the sub-chambers to receive and release fluid in response to external pressures.

The molded packing material may also include a fiber shell having a cavity formed therein with the plurality of molded fiber cushioning elements located in the cavity.
