A packaging material can include an oriented polymer film layer, a barrier layer, a primer layer, an ink layer, a cold seal adhesive layer, and a cold seal release layer. The polymer film layer has opposite first and second sides. The barrier layer can be on the first side of the polymer film layer. The primer layer can be on the barrier layer such that the barrier layer is positioned between the primer layer and the polymer film layer. The ink layer can be on the primer layer. The cold seal release layer can be on the ink layer such that the ink layer is positioned between the cold seal release layer and the primer layer. The cold seal adhesive layer can be on the second side of the polymer film layer. The packaging material can be used as a one-ply cold seal packaging material.

The present disclosure includes a process for making a package having a spout. The process includes heating a sealing area of a spout to a temperature at or above a melting point of the spout material; heating two multilayer structures around a portion of their peripheries to adhere the peripheries of sealant layers and form a partially sealed package having an opening; inserting the heated spout into the opening; and pressing opposing surfaces of the two multilayer structures around the spout to close the opening around the spout. Each multilayer structure includes a multilayer film having the sealant layer having at least 40% by weight of an ethylene-based polymer having a melting point below 112 C; an external layer including an ethylene-based polymer; and at least one intermediate layer disposed between the sealant layer and the external layer having a melting point at least 15 C higher than the sealant layer.

LIGHTWEIGHT MULTILAYER FOAM FILM WITH ENHANCED PERCEIVED SURFACE WHITENESS

A multilayer foam film with an enhanced perceived surface whiteness comprising for light-blocking, signage, and general packaging application is disclosed. In an embodiment, the film has a bulk density of less than 0.962 gr/cm.sup.3 wherein more than 50% of the cells in the foam layer are closed cells. In an embodiment, the multilayer foam film has a thickness greater than 1 mil and one of the solid skin layers contains white pigment. In another embodiment the white skin layer has a skin whiteness value of greater than 80 according to ASTM E313-73, and a skin layer tint value of less than 1 according to ASTM E313-73, and The lightness value (L*) of the white skin layer of greater than 90 in CIE L*a*b* dimension according to ASTM E308. In an embodiment, the film has a very smooth surface with a smoothness value of less than 25 in Sheffield smoothness unit configuration according to TAPPI T 538.

The material may be a non-woven fabric that contains at least two layers of weft filaments that may be bordered on one or both sides by a layer of warp filaments. When compared to other open mesh materials, the open mesh material disclosed herein has a superior combination of some or all of high strength, light weight, high dimensional stability, and openness.

One or more additional layers is aligned with at least one of the first layer or the second layer to provide structural support for the first layer and the second layer.
