System and method for adaptively switching a print mode from duplex to simplex. In one embodiment, a processor monitors memory to detect a duplex page followed by multiple contiguous simplex pages. The processor estimates a first time for the duplex sheet corresponding to the duplex page to traverse a duplex media path for switching from a duplex print mode to a simplex print mode. The processor also estimates a second time for simplex sheets corresponding to the multiple contiguous simplex pages to traverse the simplex media path in the simplex print mode, and estimates a third time for the simplex sheets to traverse the duplex media path in the duplex print mode. If the third time is less than a sum of the first time and the second time, the processor modifies the instructions to print the multiple contiguous simplex pages in the duplex print mode.

While a printing apparatus stores received image data in a memory, it detects presence/absence of a print medium fed from a feeding unit by a sensor. In accordance with the detection, the apparatus reads out image data from the memory and prints an image on a print medium. In the case of double-sided printing, the apparatus internally holds a print medium with an image being printed on the first surface. If runout of a print medium is detected while holding the print medium during double-sided printing, the apparatus reads and discards image data corresponding to an image to be printed on the runout print medium from the memory. Along with this, the apparatus performs control data reading so as to convey the print medium to print an image on the second surface of the print medium.

The recording unit performs image recording on a sheet conveyed in a conveying direction on a first conveyance path. The first roller is located further downstream than the recording unit in the first conveyance path. The second roller is located further downstream than the first roller in the first conveyance path. The guide member has a guide surface that forms a second conveyance path extending from a connection position of the first conveyance path between the first roller and the second roller. The cutting unit is located between the connection position and the second roller, cuts a sheet, and has a cutter. The guide member changes in posture between a first posture for forming the second conveyance path and a second posture for opening the second conveyance path.
