Printing Apparatus
A printing apparatus includes: a ribbon supply roll; a thermal head that heats an ink ribbon fed out from the ribbon supply roll and thereby transfers an ink onto an image receiving body; a ribbon take-up roll that takes up the ink ribbon after transfer of the ink; a supply side guide member disposed to be displaced in a direction orthogonal to an axial direction, so as to changeably apply tension to the ink ribbon by biasing force of a supply side spring member; and a take-up side guide member disposed to be displaced in a direction orthogonal to an axial direction, so as to changeably apply tension to the ink ribbon by biasing force of a take-up side spring member. A spring constant of the supply side spring member is different from a spring constant of the take-up side spring member.

RIBBON CONTROL IN INDIRECT THERMAL PRINTING
A pulse width modulation (PWM) system functions such that while label paper is moving into position, ribbon motors have power applied to maintain tension in the ribbon to avoid any contact with the adhesive. Once the label paper stops and is in position the power to the ribbon motors are cut to allow slack in the ribbon and a printhead solenoid actuates at full power to lift. Once lifted the solenoid cuts back to partial power to hold position and the ribbon motors are powered again. Thus, ribbon motor power is adjusted to allow the solenoid to lift without additional resistance.

PRINTER DEVICE FOR THERMAL PRINTING OR EMBOSSING
The invention relates to a printer device for thermal printing or embossing of a carrier film coated with a coloring matter on a substrate, wherein the printer device has a roller arrangement for accommodating the carrier film and for moving the carrier film along a conveyor path, stepper motors for driving the roller arrangement, a thermal print head for printing or embossing the coloring matter from the carrier film onto the substrate, and a swivel arrangement, which can be deflected over a swivel range, for engaging with a swivel roller of the roller arrangement and for exerting a tensile force on the carrier film. The printer device is characterized in that, with regard to an engagement with the carrier film, the swivel roller is arranged along the conveyor path directly adjacent to the thermal print head.
Bidirectional printer ribbon supply system
A bidirectional ribbon supply system for a printer includes: a shaft supported by a frame of the printer, the shaft to rotate about an axis; a pulley affixed to the shaft; and a bias member coupled between the frame and the pulley to apply a force to the pulley in either of a first or second direction responsive to rotation of the pulley in the other of the first or second direction, wherein rotation of a spindle supported on the shaft in the first direction dispenses inside-coated ribbon toward a printhead, and rotation of the spindle in the second direction dispenses outside-coated ribbon toward the printhead.
