A LIGHT METAL OR ALLOY MATRIX WORKPIECE HAVING TAILOR COATED CORROSION RESISTANT LAYERS AND METHODS FOR MAKING THE SAME
Customizable methods of protecting select regions of a light metal or alloy workpiece, such as a wheel (10), from corrosion are provided. The light metal or alloy may be magnesium, aluminum, or titanium. A first region (50) of the exposed surface (40) is identified that has increased exposure to corrosive agents in an external environment (in service conditions) as compared to a second region (52). Thus, a corrosion resistant coating is selectively formed over the first region (50) of the exposed surface (40). The second region (52) may have a second distinct corrosion resistant coating. Methods for selectively and efficiently forming such corrosion resistant systems are provided. In certain methods, the locations where the corrosion resistant coating is applied are controlled by immersing only select portions of or selectively masking the workpiece in a micro-arc oxidation electrolyte bath. In other methods, the thicknesses of the coatings are locally tailored by controlling the electric field.
METHOD OF MANUFACTURING A CAST ALLOY WHEEL
A cast aluminum wheel includes a rim element having an annular configuration defining an axis and a central element extending radially outwardly between the axis and the rim element. The rim element includes a wall extending circumferentially around the axis between a proximal bead and a distal bead. The central element includes a plurality of spokes extending radially outwardly toward the proximal bead and meets proximate the axis with adjacent of the plurality of spokes defining a cooperative feature therebetween for providing stiffness to the wheel. The spokes progressively increase in volume in a direction toward the axis from the rim element thereby providing increased mass of the spokes proximate the axis relative to the rim element.
METHOD OF MANUFACTURING A CAST ALLOY WHEEL
A cast aluminum wheel includes a rim element having an annular configuration defining an axis and a central element extending radially outwardly between the axis and the rim element. The rim element includes a wall extending circumferentially around the axis between a proximal bead and a distal bead. The central element includes a plurality of spokes extending radially outwardly toward the proximal bead and meets proximate the axis with adjacent of the plurality of spokes defining a cooperative feature therebetween for providing stiffness to the wheel. The spokes progressively increase in volume in a direction toward the axis from the rim element thereby providing increased mass of the spokes proximate the axis relative to the rim element.

A wheel for a motor vehicle comprises a rim having an outer radius and a wheel spider including a radially inner hub and a plurality of spokes extending from said hub towards said rim. At least one through-hole extends, with respect to the wheel axis, in a circumferential direction through at least one of said spokes. A radially outer edge of said through-hole or of an outermost of said through-holes is located at maximum at 75%, preferably at maximum at , of said outer radius of the rim measured at a wheel spider side of the rim.

Said vehicle wheel includes an annular portion, a plurality of spokes and a hub portion integrally formed by mould injection of fibre reinforced or carbo nano tubes containing thermoplastic, wherein each of the plurality of spokes comprise a substantially Z-shaped cross section with a middle leg and a pair of outer legs, wherein the angle enclosed by each of the pair of outer legs and the middle leg is greater than a right angle and wherein the length of the middle leg increases from the annular portion toward the hub portion.

The wheel disc comprises one or more spokes extending outwardly from a center section of the wheel disc to the rim, each spoke being formed by a substantially planar curbside spoke member and a substantially planar inside spoke member, The curbside and inside spoke members are oriented transversely to each other and to a portion of the center section lying between the curbside and inside spoke members to define a triangle. A plane of the triangle is substantially parallel to a center axis of symmetry of the disc.
