The hair treatment compositions include: (a) citric acid, one or more salts of citric acid, or a combination thereof; or a combination of citric acid and one or more salts of citric acid, wherein the weight ratio of citric acid to salts of citric acid added to form the combination is from 1:10 to 10:1; (b) one or more surfactants; and (c) water; wherein the pH of the composition is from about 3 to about 10; and weight percentages are based on the total weight of the composition. The hair treatment compositions are particularly useful for strengthening hair fibers.
