An adjustable portal box assembly for selectively mounting a wheel to an off road vehicle in either of two positions. The assembly includes a mounting plate mountable to the suspension of an off road vehicle, and a portal box is mountable to the mounting plate. The portal box includes an input shaft opening for an input shaft, and an output opening for an output shaft. The portal box is mountable to the mounting plate in a first position in which the output shaft is positioned to extend the wheelbase relative to the input shaft, or in a second position in which the output shaft is positioned in vertical alignment with the input shaft.

The first end (17A) and the second end (17B) of the reinforcement are arranged one upon the other so as to form an overlap.

The wheel assembly may also include arcuate outer rim assemblies removably coupled together to define a circular outer rim. Each arcuate outer rim assembly may include an arcuate outer rim segment, and an arcuate outer ring segment extending radially inward from the arcuate outer rim segment. The wheel assembly may also include gas springs operatively coupled between the circular inner rim and the circular outer rim to provide a gas suspension for relative movement therebetween.

An improved clamping mechanism to secure a tire between a bead ring and a wheel utilizing a bolt is provided. The bolt has a ball seat that pivots within an enlarged pilot hole in the bead ring as the bolt threads engage in threaded section of the wheel, pulling the bead ring toward the wheel. As the bead ring is tightened upon the wheel, eventually the bead ring contacts a fulcrum on the wheel, at which point the outer edge of the bead ring is leveraged against the tire bead bundle and pressing down the tire bead to lock it in place against the wheel. As the bead ring can pivot within the enlarged pilot hole around the bolt, the bolt is not stressed. Further, the wheel comprising a safety bead and non-skid coating on the inner wall of the wheel to prevent the wheel sliding around the wheel.

The rim assembly further includes a plurality of lateral rim component support structures configured to extend through a plurality of openings of a tire support structure. The rim assembly also includes a first plurality of fasteners securing the plurality of lateral rim component support structures to the first rim flange, and a second plurality of fasteners securing the plurality of lateral rim component support structures to the second rim flange.

The assembly includes a portal gear box having an input shaft opening for an input shaft, and an output shaft extending from an output shaft opening. The portal gear box also includes a set of gears effective to transmit power from the input shaft to the output shaft, and optionally to reduce the gear ratio. The assembly is mountable to the vehicle in an extended wheelbase position in which the output shaft is positioned below and forward of the input shaft when the assembly is used to mount a forward wheel, and in which the output shaft is positioned below and rearward of the input shaft when the assembly is used to mount a rear wheel.
