A SCBA with an air storage, a face piece with inner mask (nose cup), breathing regulator(s), a breathing valve, an exhalation valve operating at positive pressure relative to the ambient and a reservoir capable of storing the first part of an exhalation and delivering that part at the subsequent inhalation. The reservoir is positioned in the SCBA's face piece or in close proximity thereto, is in fluid contact with the inner mask, and has a shut-off valve controlled by a carbon-dioxide sensor. The operating pressure of the reservoir is maintained above ambient pressure and the operating pressure of the reservoir is between the opening pressure of the SCBA's breathing valve and the SCBA's exhalation valve.

A self-contained breathing apparatus includes an air cylinder pressurized to about 5500 psi, wherein the air cylinder is compatible with infrastructure used in conjunction with the air cylinder. The self-contained breathing apparatus also includes a first regulator valve for reducing air pressure from the air cylinder to a predetermined level. A second regulator valve is also provided for reducing the air pressure from the predetermined level to a level suitable for use by an operator, wherein air is supplied from the second regulator valve to the operator via a mask. The self-contained breathing apparatus further includes a frame for supporting the air cylinder on the back of the operator. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

In one or more embodiments, a mask configured for fluid communication with a fluid reservoir is provided. The mask includes a fluid regulator in fluid communication with the fluid reservoir where the fluid regulator is configured to regulate fluid flow. The fluid regulator includes a wireless communication unit configured to transmit and receive communication signals and a first indicator configured to generate a haptic output where the haptic output is generated based on a first frequency. The fluid regulator includes an audio capture device configured to capture audible signals and microcontroller unit configured to sample, at a second frequency, the audible signals where the second frequency is based at least in part on the first frequency, and cause the sampled audible signals to be transmitted by the wireless communication unit.

A pressure regulator assembly for an SCBA includes a valve assembly having a piston, a cylinder for receiving the piston, a sealing member for engagement by the piston, a conduit extending through the piston and facilitating fluid communication between an inlet chamber and a cavity of the cylinder, and a driving assembly for facilitating the engagement and disengagement of the piston responsive to a change of pressure in the outlet chamber. A bypass assembly for an SCBA is also disclosed.
