The secondary axle includes a differential, first and second halfshafs, first and second wheels, a first electric clutch selectively coupling the first wheel to the first halfshaft, and a second electric clutch selectively coupling the second wheel to the second halfshaft. A vehicle controller is programmed to: responsive to a request to activate the secondary axle and a first speed difference between the first and second wheels being less than a first threshold, engage the first and second clutches at a same time, and, in response to the request to activate the secondary axle and the first speed difference between the first and second wheels exceeding the first threshold, engage one of the clutches and then subsequently engage the other of the clutches once the one of the clutches is fully engaged.

Additionally, the suspension of the vehicle utilizes a dynamically adjustable hydraulic suspension that is capable of automatically leveling the vehicle and also provides capability to adjust nominal vehicle ride height. The vehicle is capable of multiple modes of operation, and in one mode the vehicle is able to export electrical power for usage outside of the vehicle. The vehicle body has been designed in multiple embodiments, including a sport utility model and pickup truck model. Additionally, each embodiment is designed with available two door and four door variants. All vehicle variants utilize the aforementioned common powertrain and chassis.

A drive unit having motor output shaft that is connected to a sun gear is connected to one or more planetary gears that are connected to a planetary gear housing. The housing is connected to planetary gear assembly pinion gear, which is connected to a ring gear. A first side of the ring gear is connected to a first clutch drum and the second side of the ring gear is connected to a second clutch drum. Connected to the first clutch drum is a first plurality of clutch plates interleafed with a second plurality of clutch plates connected to a first clutch can. The first clutch can is connected to a first shaft. Connected to the second clutch drum is a third plurality of clutch plates interleafed with a fourth plurality of clutch plates connected to a second clutch can. The second clutch can is connected to a second shaft.
