An operating input device for a vehicle and to a steering input device is disclosed. The operating input device has an upper part having an operating input surface with an input area associated with an operating function, and a lower part serving as a support structure for the upper part. The upper part is relatively movable to the lower part by an operating input force applied on the operating input surface in an operating input direction extending substantially perpendicular to the operating input surface. For generating a haptic feedback, the upper part and the lower part are coupled movably relative to each other such that by a feedback actuation mechanism, which is couplable to the operating input device, the upper part is movable relatively to the lower part at least in a first haptic feedback generating direction extending at least substantially parallel to the operating input surface.

Systems and methods are provided for ultrasonic haptic array devices. One embodiment of haptic array device includes a plurality of cells, each cell including a base and an array of ultrasonic transducer elements, and a support structure configured to independently position each cell. A controller of the haptic array can control a focus point and a direction of ultrasonic output for each of the plurality of cells. Another embodiment is directed to a vehicle user interface having a user interface surface and a haptic array device integrated with the user interface surface. Embodiments are also directed to methods for controlling a haptic array device. One method includes controlling output of at least one first cell of the plurality of cells to control a focus point and a direction of ultrasonic output of the at least one cell, and updating output of the plurality of cells.

The contact surface is configured to move toward a first side of the contact surface when a pressure is exerted upon the contact surface by a user. The peed detector is configured to detect a speed of the contact surface moving toward the first side. The feedback generator is configured to provide feedback to the user. The controller is configured to control the feedback generator according to the speed of the contact surface detected by the speed detector.
