Integrated steering wheel, vibration absorber, and driver airbag

A steering wheel assembly (10) contains a dampening system for mitigating vibrations transferred from a vehicle to the steering wheel assembly (10). A plurality of damper spring elements or grommets or damper spring elements (22) are each retained within a corresponding steering wheel support member (330). An air bag module (14) is fixed to a steering wheel (18) while resting upon the damper spring elements (22) for eliminating and/or reducing lateral displacement/vibrations normally attendant to vehicle operation. A horn switch (16) containing a plurality of annular support members (76, 176) may be positioned over the damper spring elements (22), wherein each annular support member (76, 176) is coaxially aligned and positioned over a corresponding grommet (22) to also manage vertical displacement; the air bag module (14) is then fixed over the horn switch 16 and to the steering wheel (18). Movement of the airbag module can actuate the horn switch.

A delay unit for use in a steering wheel system, the steering wheel system having a steering wheel and a horn actuated by a tactile input configured to provide electric power to a semiconductor switch electrically coupled to the horn. The delay unit includes a semiconductor switch and a time charging unit connected in parallel with the semiconductor unit. The time charging unit is configured to hold a predetermined amount of electric power before electrically connecting the electric power to the semiconductor switch. As such, the time charging unit generates a delay in the transmission of electric power to the semiconductor switch so as to prevent the horn from being actuated when the steering wheel is mounted onto the steering column.

The pressure sensing module is disposed at the pressing portion for sensing the pressed status of the pressing portion and outputting a pressure sensing signal. The control module is configured to have preset pressure ranges and connected to the pressure sensing module. The preset pressure ranges correspond to multiple volume levels of the horn. The control module receives the pressure sensing signal and compares it with the preset pressure ranges to control the volume of the horn to sound.

A damper unit for use in a vibration-reducing assembly for a steering wheel is disclosed. The damper unit includes a slider configured, upon horn activation, to slide on a guide shaft. A damper element made from an elastomeric material is arranged on a first part of the slider. A molded horn spring element is molded directly on a second part of the slider and is configured to exert a spring force on the slider. The damper unit provides a unitary structure providing both a vibration damping function and a horn spring function in one single assembly unit, reducing the number of components to assemble. A vibration-reducing damper assembly including one or more such damper units is also disclosed, as well as a method of making such a damper unit.

A steering assembly and a system for actuating a vehicle horn uses a grounding signal transmitted from the steering assembly to an electronic control unit in communication with an electronically actuated horn. The steering assembly includes a base plate connected to a hub in the steering assembly. At least one horn grounding switch is coupled to the base plate and has a ground contact generating an output from the horn grounding switch. The ground contact is movable between a normally closed position connected to the vehicle electrical ground that corresponds to the off status of the vehicle horn and an open position disconnected from the vehicle electrical ground that corresponds to the on status of the vehicle horn. A biasing force directs the ground contact to a normally closed position in electrical communication with the vehicle electrical ground.

An airbag device with a horn switch body, configured so as to be installed in an upper surface side in a boss portion near a center of a steering wheel, includes: an airbag which inflates by receiving inflation gas; an inflator for supplying inflation gas to the airbag; a pad covering the folded airbag: a mounting base made of sheet metal which holds the airbag, the inflator, and the pad; a horn switch body having an assembling pin to be assembled to a main body side of the steering wheel; and a support plate made of a sheet metal which supports the horn switch body as a configuration attached to a lower surface side of the mounting base. A case around the assembling pin, the mounting base, or the support plate is provided with a spacer capable of preventing rattling of the switch disposition portion in the case.
