A motor vehicle license plate mount having a modular license plate frame including a base section and two side mounts for securing license plates of varying widths and heights to the vehicle and a camera housing including a lens and with the base section forming a slot for receiving an exterior edge of the license plate. A system, apparatus and method for secure vehicle sharing comprising a computerized client device in the form of a mountable vehicle license plate frame (SLPF) 117 enabled for wireless communication and connection to a wide area network 101 including a server 103. The SLPF 117 device has a processor with an instance of the software 105 executing from memory thereon, Global Positioning System (GPS) capability, power source, and a locking key compartment. The SLPF 117 device may be easily mounted, after market, to the vehicles of registered vehicle owners 107. The server 103 receiving a request from a registered vehicle renter 111 to rent a vehicle, accesses the database and matches the request to at least one registered vehicle 116 including the SLPF 117 located within an area specified by the renter request and sends matching results to the vehicle renter's personal wireless communications device 114 to select an available registered vehicle 116 and sending location data (including GPS data) enabling the vehicle renter to locate the selected vehicle, and security data to enable the renter to unlock the key compartment and remove a key or other item to operate the vehicle. The server may track time of use, vehicle mileage and vehicle location while the vehicle renter is operating the vehicle. Upon completion of vehicle use, the renter replaces the key or other item in the locking compartment, sends notification of completion of use to the server which then completes a financial transaction between the renter and owner.

This invention provides a vanity frame for a vehicle's license plate, featuring a rectangular design compatible with standard license plate dimensions. The frame includes two longer and two shorter sides, with a central opening for license plate visibility. A distinctive feature of this frame is the inclusion of pass-through openings on its sides and a cavity in one of the longer sides. A license plate lighting assembly for enhancing visibility of a license plate includes a frame is mountable around a license plate on a vehicle. The frame is comprised of a translucent material to pass light through the frame. A plurality of light emitters is each integrated into the frame and each of the light emitters emits light outwardly through the frame when the light emitters are turned on to illuminate the license plate. Each of the light emitters is in remote communication with a personal electronic device thereby facilitating the personal electronic device to remotely control the plurality of light emitters.

Method and apparatus are disclosed for detecting and mitigating unauthorized vehicle license plate removal. An example vehicle includes a detection circuit having an insulator configured to slide along an axis based on a rotation of a screw holding a license plate, and a processor. The processor is configured to determine, based on a position of the insulator, that the screw has been removed while the vehicle is locked, and responsively activate a camera directed toward the license plate.
