Wake vortex avoidance system and method

A wake vortex avoidance system includes a microphone array configured to detect low frequency sounds. A signal processor determines a geometric mean coherence based on the detected low frequency sounds. A display displays wake vortices based on the determined geometric mean coherence.

Probabilistic safe landing area determination

According to an aspect of the invention, a method of probabilistic safe landing area determination for an aircraft includes receiving sensor data indicative of current conditions at potential landing areas for the aircraft. Feature extraction on the sensor data is performed. A processing subsystem of the aircraft updates a probabilistic safe landing area map based on comparing extracted features of the sensor data with a probabilistic safe landing area model. The probabilistic safe landing area model defines probabilities that terrain features are suitable for safe landing of the aircraft. A list of ranked landing areas is generated based on the probabilistic safe landing area map.

Method of facilitating the approach to a platform

A method of facilitating the approach to a platform by an aircraft. The value of the required position integrity performance (RNP) is determined for a localization system. During an approach stage, this position integrity performance (RNP) is compared with a position integrity radius (HPL) resulting from the use of a GNSS localization system, and an alert is generated if the position integrity radius (HPL) is greater than the position integrity performance (RNP).

A system and method for safe and effective implementation of approach procedures for guiding multiple aircraft of different weights approaching a single runway for landing, whereby lighter incoming aircraft will fly higher than heavier aircraft to avoid the wakes from the heavier aircraft, for the purpose of increasing the landing rate and, in turn, the number of aircraft that can land.

UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLE AND METHOD FOR SAFELY LANDING AN UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLE
20170092137 · 2017-03-30 ·

An unmanned aerial vehicle with lift and propulsion system and a flight control system and method. The flight control system has a flight control unit, a navigation system, a communication system and an actuator system. The flight control unit can calculate, based on data from the navigation system and/or data of a ground control station, control commands which can be fed to the actuator system for actuating the lift and propulsion system. The ground control station is configured to control and/or monitor the aerial vehicle. The aerial vehicle has a monitoring unit to monitor the communication system to determine whether all the communication links are interrupted. The monitoring unit can cause the flight control unit to land the aerial vehicle safely at a suitable landing site based on stored data relating to current flight conditions and nearby landing sites.

METHODS AND APPARATUS FOR MANAGING A PREMATURE DESCENT ENVELOPE DURING DESCENT OF AN AIRCRAFT

A method for managing a premature descent envelope during descent of an aircraft is provided. The method receives glideslope deviation data by an instrument landing system (ILS) onboard the aircraft; compares, by the ILS, the glideslope deviation data to an acceptable band of glideslope deviation values; and when the glideslope deviation data is within the acceptable band, expands, by a terrain awareness and warning system (TAWS), the premature descent envelope to produce an increased premature descent envelope for the aircraft.

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR MONITORING COMPLIANCE WITH A NON-TRANSGRESSION ZONE BETWEEN AIRCRAFT APPROACH CORRIDORS
20170084182 · 2017-03-23 ·

A method, computing system and computer program product are provided to monitor compliance with a non-transgression zone between aircraft approach corridors, thereby facilitating simultaneous instrument approaches. In the context of a method, a predicted path of an aircraft is determined during a flight based upon at least a representation of a roll angle of the aircraft and a cross-track component of the velocity of the aircraft. The method also includes identifying an instance in which the predicted path of the aircraft during the flight intersects a non-transgression zone. The method further includes causing an alert to be issued in the instance in which the predicted path of the aircraft during the flight intersects the non-transgression zone.
