The method involves monitoring at least one operating parameter of the powertrain; estimating the time (tE) between initiation of a first power upshift and initiation of a sequential second power upshift using the prediction model; and, if the estimated time is shorter than a predetermined time limit (tLIM), controlling the propulsion unit to limit the vehicle acceleration so that the time between the first and second power upshifts is increased to be at least equal to the predetermined time limit (tLIM).

Disclosed is a method for calculating a control setpoint of a hybrid powertrain of a motor vehicle, the hybrid powertrain including an electric motor and an internal combustion engine (ICE) that is equipped with a gearbox and that is supplied with fuel. The method includes: acquiring a value relative to a power requested at the vehicle's drive wheels; and determining the contribution of the electric motor and the ICE in order to satisfy the request for power at the drive wheels. The determination step involves calculating a triplet of three values, one value relating to the electromechanical power that the electric motor must provide, one value relating to the thermomechanical power that the ICE must provide and one value relating to the ratio that needs to be engaged in the gearbox, this triplet minimising the fuel consumption of the ICE and the current consumption of the electric motor.

Embodiments of the invention provide a control system for a hybrid electric vehicle, the vehicle having a powertrain comprising at least one electric propulsion motor and at least one engine, the control system being operable to control the vehicle to operate in an electric vehicle (EV) mode in which the at least one engine remains switched off and the at least one electric propulsion motor is configured to deliver drive torque and a boost mode in which the at least one engine is switched on to provide additional power to drive the vehicle. When the vehicle is operating in EV mode the system is further operable to determine whether a boost location exists ahead of the vehicle being a location at which a gradient of a driving surface is sufficiently high to require selection of the boost mode, the control system being operable automatically to command starting of the at least one engine before the boost location is reached.
