Golf ball cores having foam center and polymeric outer layers with hardness gradients

Multi-layered golf ball core sub-assemblies and the resulting golf balls are provided. The core structure includes an inner core (center) comprising a foam composition, preferably foamed polyurethane. The intermediate core layer is preferably formed from a thermoplastic composition such as an ethylene acid copolymer ionomer resin; and the outer core layer is preferably formed from a thermoset composition such as polybutadiene rubber. The core layers have different hardness and specific gravity levels. The core assembly preferably has a positive hardness gradient extending across the entire assembly. The core structure and resulting ball have relatively good resiliency.

Golf ball

An object of the present invention is to provide a golf ball showing a low spin rate on driver shots and an excellent shot feeing. The present invention provides a golf ball having a spherical core and at least one cover covering the spherical core, wherein the spherical core is formed from a rubber composition containing: (a) a base rubber, (b) an ,-unsaturated carboxylic acid having 3 to 8 carbon atoms and/or a metal salt thereof as a co-crosslinking agent, (c) a crosslinking initiator, and at least one compound of (d) mercaptobenzoic acids and/or salts thereof, provided that the rubber composition further contains (e) a metal compound in the case of containing only (b) the ,-unsaturated carboxylic acid having 3 to 8 carbon atoms as the co-crosslinking agent, and the spherical core has a hardness difference (HsHo) between a surface hardness (Hs) and a center hardness (Ho) thereof of 20 or more in JIS-C hardness.

Sports ball and method of manufacture

A sports ball comprising an inner core with a plurality of nubs on its exterior surface, and an outer shell comprising two hemispheres that surround the inner core such that the plurality of nubs contact the inner surfaces of the outer shell's inner cavity. The outer core can comprise a cross-linked closed-cell foam such that the sports ball can be more durable and softer than conventional balls normally used for the same sport.

Golf ball having a core and a cover of one or more layers, the core being formed of a material molded under heat from a rubber composition including a base rubber, an organic peroxide, and water and/or a metal monocarboxylate. Defining the tan slope as (tan .sub.10tan .sub.1)/(10%1%), where tan .sub.1 and tan .sub.10 are the loss tangents at dynamic strains of, respectively, 1% and 10% when the loss tangents of the core center and the core surface are measured at 12 C. and 15 Hz, the difference between the tan slopes at the core surface and the core center is larger than 0.002. Because a core material which undergoes little decrease in resilience over time and experiences little energy loss can be obtained, the golf ball maintains a good rebound, has a reduced spin rate and thus is able to achieve an increased distance.

MULTI-LAYER CORE GOLF BALL

Golf balls comprising a multi-layer core and a cover are disclosed. The multi-layer core comprises a layer formed from a highly neutralized polymer composition and a layer formed from a thermoset rubber.

The center hardness is less than the first surface hardness to define a first positive hardness gradient of about 1 to 12 Shore C. An outer core layer has a second surface hardness. A cover layer is formed over the outer core layer. The second outer surface hardness is greater than the geometric center hardness to define a second positive hardness gradient of about 12 to 22 Shore C.

Medium gradient dual core golf ball

A golf ball includes an inner core layer having a first surface hardness and a geometric center hardness. The center hardness is less than the first surface hardness to define a first positive hardness gradient of about 1 to 12 Shore C. An outer core layer has a second surface hardness. A cover layer is formed over the outer core layer. The second outer surface hardness is greater than the geometric center hardness to define a second positive hardness gradient of about 12 to 22 Shore C.
