Derivatives of N-desulfated glycosaminoglycans and use as drugs

A glycosaminoglycan derivative which is obtainable by a process that includes the steps of N-desulfation of from 25% to 100% of the N-sulfated residues of a glycosaminoglycan, and oxidation, by periodate at a pH of from 5.5 to 10.0, of from 25% to 100% of the 2-N-, 3-O-non-sulfated glucosamine residues, and of the 2-O-non-sulfated uronic acid residues of said glycosaminoglycan, under conditions effective to convert adjacent diols and adjacent OH/NH.sub.2 to aldehydes. The process further includes reduction, by sodium borohydride, of said oxidized glycosaminoglycan, under conditions effective to convert said aldehydes to alcohols, where the glycosaminoglycan is heparin, low molecular weight heparin, heparan sulfate or fractions thereof.

Hydrophilic modification of water insoluble polysaccharide as surface-active agents

A surfactant produced by reacting naturally occurring polysaccharides that are not water soluble with a hydrophilic substituent on a carboxylic portion of the polysaccharide. In a second reaction, the surfactant is further substituted on a hydroxylic portion with a hydrophobic or lipophilic substituent, so as to make the reaction product both water soluble and capable of attracting oily material that is hydrophobic to be removed from a substrate by cleaning in water. Methods of making the surfactant and the follow-on reaction product are described.

Crosslinking of biopolymers in a semi-solid state

The present invention relates to methods of providing biocompatible/biodegradable hydrogels obtained by crosslinking of biopolymers (for example polysaccharides or proteins) in the semi-solid (modelling-clay like) state at water content below 70% by weight. The resulting materials can be applied in medicine, pharmacy and/or in cosmetics.

Anti-algal bloom composition containing water-soluble free amine chitosan as active ingredient, and method for removing algal-bloom using same

The present invention relates to a composition for anti-green algae containing water-soluble free amine chitosan having the anti-algae activity against water-bloom forming algae as an active ingredient and a method for preparing the same. Particularly, the water-soluble free amine chitosan of the present invention can kill directly water-bloom forming algae, suggesting that it has excellent anti-green algae activity to inhibit water-bloom, and is non-toxic to freshwater organism cells. Therefore, the composition for anti-green algae containing the said water-soluble free amine chitosan as an active ingredient can be efficiently used as a safe anti-green algae composition applicable in the freshwater ecosystem including solidified dam, reservoir, lake, golf course water hazard, pond, freshwater fish farm, and fishing spot.

In one aspect, the present invention includes a haemostat composition that includes a chitosan, chitosan salt or chitosan derivative, and a physiologically acceptable acid selected from the group consisting of lactic acid, formic acid, acetic acid, ascorbic acid, halogen acetic acids, propanoic acid, propenoic acid, acrylic acid, glyoxylic acid, pyruvic acid or a hydroxy propionic/butanoic acid, and combinations of any two or more thereof; or one or more acids selected from hydrochloric acid and sulphuric acid. The haemostat composition is able to safely gradually and fully degrade in a human or animal body within about 30 days and so can be utilised by physicians to stem a flow of blood and promote healing both after as well as during surgical procedures.

Flexible poly-p-(phenyleneethynylene)s with controlled conjugation length and biodegradable conjugated polymers for target organelle specific labeling and drug delivery

A novel monomer design for the synthesis of PPE-type polymers containing conjugated segments of well-defined length connected by flexible linkers under Sonogashira reaction conditions is presented. The resulting polymers retain the photophysical properties of a fully conjugated PPE. The extent of incorporation of the flexible units along the backbone is governed by the comonomer feed ratio and can be varied in a statistically predictable fashion.

Provided are a crosslinked hyaluronic acid product in the form of powder and a method of preparing the same, and a crosslinked hyaluronic acid hydrogel prepared using the crosslinked hyaluronic acid product in the form of powder, and a method of preparing the same. The crosslinked hyaluronic acid hydrogel according to the present disclosure exhibits excellent rheological properties, and mass production thereof is easy and quality uniformity thereof is excellent.

Process for the preparation and purification of the sodium salt of hyaluronic acid

The present invention concerns a process for the preparation and purification of the sodium salt of HA from the fermentation broth of Streptococcus or Bacillus or from rooster combs, the sodium salt of HA obtained and purified with said process and pharmaceutical, cosmetic and nutritional compositions comprising said sodium salt of HA.

CHITOSAN BASED COATING SYSTEM

A chitosan based coating system. The coating system includes a carrier agent and a chitosan based agent preservative. The carrier agent may be a cleaning agent, a polishing agent, and/or a finishing agent. The chitosan based agent may be a chitosan acetate and salts thereof, chitosan citrate acetate and salts thereof, or combinations thereof. The coating system may include 0.01-5 weight percent chitosan based agent. The chitosan based agent functions as a preservative to increase both the shelf-life and use-life of the coating system as well as functions as a chelating agent to reduce soap scum.
