The electronic control unit estimates the temperature of the heat generating location based on an estimated value of a driving force input to an input rotating member, when it is not possible for the driving force corresponding to the command torque to be transmitted to auxiliary drive wheels due to a magnitude of the driving force generated by a drive source or occurrence of a wheel slip.

Methods and system are provided for locking a half shaft to a wheel hub to engage four wheel drive are disclosed. In one example, a wheel hub is locked to a half shaft via a radially expanding engagement mechanism. The radially expanding engagement mechanism is without grease and without springs.

The learning portion performs the correction for the relationship by using the drive current supplied to the coupling and the braking torque at the time of determination that the transmission torque is balanced with the braking torque based on rotational speeds of the input-side rotating member and the output-side rotating member while the rotational speed of the input-side rotating member is increased.

A wheel hub clutch includes: a notch plate; a pocket plate having pockets and plunger passages in communication with the pockets; locking members carried in the pocket plate pockets; and plungers carried in the pocket plate plunger passages and configured to drive the locking members into engagement with the notches in the notch plate. The clutch also may include a translator with a permanent magnet that cooperates with an electromagnet of a stator to translate the translator. The translator may be coupled to the locking members to translate them into and out of engagement with the notch plate. Also disclosed is a wheel end system including the wheel hub clutch, a drivetrain including the wheel end system and wheel hub clutch, and a vehicle including the drivetrain.
