A plastic melt machine includes a feed screw rotatably mounted in a barrel and driven in rotation about a longitudinal screw axis of the feed screw by a screw drive to plasticize material, and an apparatus for driving a device independently of the feed screw. The device can be any rotatable device associated with the feed screw wherein the device is rotatable about a drive axis and is in fluid communication with the barrel to receive the plasticized material. The drive axis is coaxial with the screw axis. A drive shaft couples the device to the device drive, or to the screw drive through a speed changer, for rotating the device independently of the rotation of the feed screw by the screw drive.

Forming different plastic products from a single melt

Systems (200) and methods for making different plastic products (202, 204) in a single melting process are provided. A method includes melting a plastic resin in a first extruder (104) to form a melt (106) and transferring at least a portion of the melt to a second extruder (114). Any portion of the melt (106) that is not transferred to the second extruder (114) is formed into a first plastic product (202). Additives (116) are blended with the melt in the second extruder to form a second melt (118), and a second plastic product (204) is formed from the second melt (118).

In situ exfoliation method to fabricate a graphene-reinforced polymer matrix composite (G-PMC)

A method for forming a graphene-reinforced polymer matrix composite is disclosed. The method includes distributing graphite microparticles into a molten thermoplastic polymer phase; and applying a succession of shear strain events to the molten polymer phase so that the molten polymer phase exfoliates the graphite successively with each event until at least 50% of the graphite is exfoliated to form a distribution in the molten polymer phase of single- and multi-layer graphene nanoparticles less than 50 nanometers thick along the c-axis direction.

Process for recycling plastic materials

The invention relates to a method and to an assembly for recycling plastic materials, comprising the following processing steps: a) reprocessing the raw material, wherein the material, if necessary, is comminuted and brought into a fluid-like form and heated and permanently mixed, while preserving the lumpiness and pourability thereof, and optionally the viscosity thereof is increased and/or it is degassed, softened, dried and/or crystallized; b) melting the reprocessed material, at least so much that filtration is possible; c) filtering the melt in order to remove impurities; d) homogenizing the filtered melt; e) degassing the homogenized melt; and f) discharging and/or subsequently processing the melt, such as by granulation, blown film processing, with said processing steps being carried out consecutively in the order listed (FIG. 2).
