A system for analyzing a railroad track comprises a transport device, a camera coupled to the transport device, an electronic display device, a memory device, and one or more processors. The camera is disposed adjacent to a rail of the railroad track and generates image data reproducible as one or more images of at least a portion of a surface of the rail. The processors can produce an image of the rail surface, which includes a plurality of elongated portions. The image is analyzed to identify any defects that exist within each elongated portion of the rail surface. The processors determine a value of a metric for each elongated portion of the rail surface. The metric is associated with the identified defects. The electronic display device displays a graph indicative of the metric for each elongated portion, the image of the rail surface, or both.
ULTRASONIC TESTING INSPECTION WITH COUPLING VALIDATION
An ultrasonic testing system includes one or more matrix array ultrasonic probes, a probe positioning assembly, and an analyzer. The assembly is configured to position the probes for ultrasonic communication with a target, such as a wheel, including at least one coupling validation geometry. Each of the probes is configured to emit a validation ultrasonic signal directed towards a coupling validation geometry within the wheel, measure its emitted validation ultrasonic signal after reflection from a respective coupling validation geometry, and at least one of emit an ultrasonic inspection signal and measure an inspection ultrasonic signal reflected from a defect positioned within an inspection area of the wheel. The analyzer is configured to receive the measured validation ultrasonic signal and the measured inspection ultrasonic signal, determine that the measured validation ultrasonic signal matches a reference validation signal, and output a first notification representing validation of the measured inspection ultrasonic signal.
System and method for inspecting a rail using machine learning
An aspect includes a vehicle that includes rail inspection sensors configured for capturing transducer data describing the rail, and a processor configured for receiving and processing the transducer data in near-real time to determine whether the captured transducer data identifies a suspected rail flaw. The processing includes inputting the captured transducer data to a machine learning system that has been trained to identify patterns in transducer data that indicate rail flaws. The processing also includes receiving an output from the machine learning system, the output indicating whether the captured transducer data identifies a suspected rail flaw. An alert is transmitted to an operator of the vehicle based at least in part on the output indicating that the captured transducer data identifies a suspected rail flaw. The alert includes a location of the suspected rail flaw and instructs the operator to stop the vehicle and to perform a repair action.
ROLLING SEARCH UNIT FOR ULTRASONIC RAILROAD RAIL INSPECTION
A rolling search unit for ultrasonic inspection of railroad rails employs a wheel assembly including a fluid-filled tire that rolls along a rail with ultrasonic transducers that propagate ultrasonic beams through the fluid and tire into an underlying rail during an inspection operation. The beams reflected from defects in the rail return to the transducers and are detected and analyzed for subsequent care. The wheel assembly also includes an anti-rotation baffle to reduce rotation of the fluid with the tire and a pressure regulator for controlling the pressure of the fluid within the tire at various speeds.

The system includes: a sensor part group that has a plurality of sensor parts having receiver coils, and first oscillator coils and second oscillator coils corresponding to the receiver coils being arranged in a line parallel in a width direction of a railroad rail to be inspected; an oscillation part that supplies an oscillation signal to each of the first oscillator coils and the second oscillator coils; and a detection part group that has a plurality of detection parts to detect, with respect to an output signal from each of the receiver coils when the sensor part group moves in a laying direction of the railroad rail, a first inspection signal corresponding to a first phase of the output signal and a second inspection signal corresponding to a second phase of the output signal.
