Systems and methods for automatic air and electrical connections on autonomous cargo vehicles
The technology relates to autonomous vehicles having hitched or towed trailers for transporting cargo and other items between locations. Aspects of the technology provide a smart hitch connection between the fifth-wheel of a tractor unit and the kingpin of a trailer. This avoids requiring a person to make physical pneumatic and electrical connections between the fifth-wheel and kingpin using external hoses and cables. Instead, the necessary connections are made internally, autonomously. For instance, the fifth-wheel may provide air pressure via one or more slots arranged on a connection surface, and the trailer is configured to receive the air pressure through one or more openings on a contact surface of the kingpin. An electrical connection section of the fifth-wheel may also provide electrical signals and/or power to an electrical contact interface of the kingpin. Rotational information about relative alignment of the trailer to the tractor unit may also be provided.
Systems and methods for flexible manufacturing using self-driving vehicles
Systems and methods for flexible conveyance in an assembly-line or manufacturing process are disclosed. A fleet of self-driving vehicles and a fleet-management system can be used to convey workpieces through a sequence of workstations at which operations are performed in order to produce a finished assembly. An assembly can be transported to a first workstation using a self-driving vehicle, where an operation is performed on the assembly. Subsequently, the assembly can be transported to a second workstation using the self-driving vehicle. The operation can be performed on the assembly while it is being conveyed by the self-driving vehicle.
Safety control module for a robot assembly and method of same
A robot assembly for safe operation in a manufacturing setting with humans including a sensor for detecting a human location and human movement is provided. A safety control module providing a boundary of a safety zone area that is associated with the human in a task oriented state that includes a largest possible area in which the human or an associated work object can extend when the human is standing in one location and performing the work task. The human movement and safety zone area location being used to develop a capture set area that includes at least one predictive future safety zone area location. Using the at least one predicted future safety zone area, establishing a travel path for moving the robot between locations without overlapping the capture set area.
Method, system and apparatus for dynamic loop closure in mapping trajectories
A method for dynamic loop closure in a mobile automation apparatus includes: obtaining mapping trajectory data defining a plurality of trajectory segments traversing a facility to be mapped; controlling a locomotive mechanism of the apparatus to traverse a current segment; generating a sequence of keyframes for the current segment using sensor data captured via a navigational sensor of the apparatus; and, for each keyframe: determining an estimated apparatus pose based on the sensor data and a preceding estimated pose corresponding to a preceding keyframe; and, determining a noise metric defining a level of uncertainty associated with the estimated pose relative to the preceding estimated pose; determining, for a selected keyframe, an accumulated noise metric based on the noise metrics for the selected keyframe and each previous keyframe; and when the accumulated noise metric exceeds a threshold, updating the mapping trajectory data to insert a repetition of one of the segments.
SELF-CALIBRATING SENSORS AND ACTUATORS FOR UNMANNED VEHICLES
An apparatus, method, and system of self-calibrating sensors and actuators for unmanned vehicles is provided, which includes an unmanned vehicle comprising: a chassis; a propulsion system; one or more sensors configured to sense features around the chassis; a memory; a communication interface; and a processor configured to: operate the propulsion system in a guided calibration mode; automatically switch operation of the propulsion system to an autonomous calibration mode when a degree of certainty on a calibration of one or more of sensor data and a position of the chassis is above a first threshold value associated with safe operation of the propulsion system in the autonomous calibration mode; thereafter, operate the propulsion system in the autonomous calibration mode; and, automatically switch operation of the propulsion system to an operational mode when the degree of certainty is above a second threshold value greater than the first threshold value.
Roadmap annotation for deadlock-free multi-agent navigation
Apparatus and methods related to routing robots are provided. A roadmap of an environment that includes first and second robots can be received. The roadmap can be annotated with unidirectional lanes connecting conflict regions, where each lane ends so to avoid blocking a conflict region. First and second routes for the respective uses of the first and second robots can be determined, where both the first and second routes include a first lane connected to a first conflict region. A first, higher priority and a second, lower priority can be assigned to the respective first and second robots. It can be determined that the second robot following the second route will block the first robot on the first lane. Based on the first priority being higher than the second priority, the computing device can alter the second route to prevent the second robot from blocking the first robot.

One variation of a method for automating transfer of plants within an agricultural facility includes: dispatching a loader to autonomously deliver a first module—defining a first array of plant slots at a first density and loaded with a first set of plants at a first growth stage—from a first grow location within an agricultural facility to a transfer station within the agricultural facility; dispatching the loader to autonomously deliver a second module—defining a second array of plant slots at a second density less than the first density and empty of plants—to the transfer station; recording a module-level optical scan of the first module; extracting a viability parameter of the first set of plants from features detected in the module-level optical scan; and if the viability parameter falls outside of a target viability range, rejecting transfer of the first set of plants from the first module.
