A method includes: determining a mass of a golf shaft having a length; determining a center of mass of the golf shaft; determining one or more characteristics of an insert based on: the mass of the golf shaft; and a target mass for golf shafts having the length; determining a location of the insert between a first end of the golf shaft where a golf grip is to be attached and a second end of the golf shaft where a golf club head is to be attached based on: the center of mass of the golf shaft; and a target center of mass for golf shafts having the length; and inserting an insert having the determined one or more characteristics within an interior of the golf shaft at the determined location, thereby creating an interference fit between the insert and the interior of the golf shaft.

Iron-type golf club heads can have a high-COR face portion with an optimized face thickness profile that maximizes selected performance characteristics, such as ball speed, ball spin or ball trajectory angle, while maintaining certain required constraint properties, such as keeping stresses low for durability. Such face portions can have certain regions that are significantly stiffer than other regions of the face portion. For example, a low region of the face portion can be significantly stiffer than a high region of the face, or one quadrant of the face can be significantly stiffer than other quadrants of the face. Disclosed face thickness profiles can feature irregularly shaped contours that maximize the distribution of material in the face for optimal performance characteristics within defined constraints.

A co-forged iron type golf club is disclosed. More specifically, the present invention discloses an iron type golf club head from a pre-form billet that already contains two or more materials before the actual forging process resulting in a multi-material golf club head that doesn't require any post manufacturing operations such as machining, welding, swaging, gluing, and the like. The resultant golf club head may be capable of achieving center of gravity locations previously unachievable without utilizing this co-forging technique. The resultant golf club head may be used to create a set of golf club heads with center of gravity locations that are more advantageous throughout a set of golf clubs.

Golf club heads and methods to manufacture golf club heads

Embodiments of golf club heads and methods to manufacture golf club heads are generally described herein. In one example, a set of golf club heads includes a plurality of golf club heads with ach golf club head having a distinct loft angle ranging from 19.5° to 47°. Each golf club head produces a loudness as a result of striking a golf ball at a predetermined golf club head speed. The loudness is in sone units and is based on a sound pressure measurement performed at a predetermined sampling rate and taken for a fixed duration of time with a microphone placed directly above the golf ball at a fixed vertical distance. For a golf club head speed of 80 mph, the loudness of each golf club head ranges from 82.58 to 92.76 sones and is inversely related to loft angle. For a golf club head speed of 85 mph, the loudness of each golf club head ranges from 86.85 to 97.07 sones and is inversely related to loft angle. For a golf club head speed of 90 mph, the loudness of each of golf club head ranges from 92.90 to 101.82 sones and is inversely related to loft angle.
