Vehicle motion sensing system

A device for attachment to a train having a lead locomotive or control car and a rear car in a track network having a plurality of tracks is disclosed. The device may include at least one sensor. The sensor(s) may be disposed with the rear car. The sensor(s) may be configured to generate sensor data associated with at least one of a heading of the rear car of the train or a distance between the rear car of the train and an object in the track network. A communication interface may be configured to transmit the sensor data to at least one receiver. The receiver(s) may provide at least one indication based on the sensor data. A device for use onboard the train, a control system, a method for operating the device(s), and a method for coupling the train to a separate car are also disclosed.

Vehicle control system

A vehicle control system includes a movement sensor configured to output information indicative of movement of a vehicle system and a controller configured to determine whether the vehicle system has stopped moving based on the information that is output from the movement sensor. The controller is configured to increment a counter based on a length of time that the vehicle system has remained stopped. The controller is configured to control operation of the vehicle system based on the counter that is incremented.

A computer-implemented method of determining a position of a vehicle within a transport network comprises obtaining track geometry data indicating track geometry of at least a part of the transport network; receiving first sensor data from an inertial measurement unit mounted to the vehicle; executing a Bayesian estimation filter algorithm to predict a position of the vehicle, wherein the Bayesian estimation filter algorithm comprises a process model, the process model comprising a strapdown inertial navigation algorithm, and wherein the strapdown inertial navigation algorithm generates data indicative of the predicted position of the vehicle based at least upon the first sensor data and the track geometry data such that the predicted position of the vehicle lies on a track defined by the track geometry data; receiving second sensor data from a sensor other than an inertial measurement unit, wherein the sensor is mounted to the vehicle; executing the Bayesian estimation filter algorithm to update the predicted position of the vehicle based at least upon the second sensor data; and generating an output indicative of a position of the vehicle within the transport network based upon at least one of the predicted position of the vehicle and the updated predicted position of the vehicle.

A computer-implemented method of determining a position of a vehicle 10 within a transport network comprises: obtaining track geometry data indicating track geometry of at least a part of the transport network; determining, based upon the track geometry data, that the vehicle is approaching a junction; determining, based upon the track geometry data, a plurality of route options from the junction; generating a plurality of Bayesian estimation filter algorithms each associated with a respective one of the plurality of route options and configured to estimate a position of the vehicle based upon the track geometry data indicative of the associated route option, wherein the plurality of Bayesian estimation filter algorithms are configured to output data indicative of probabilities of the vehicle taking the associated route options; monitoring the output of the plurality of Bayesian estimation filter algorithms as the vehicle passes through the junction; and determining the route option taken by the vehicle by selecting one of the plurality of route options which presents the highest probability based upon the output of the plurality of Bayesian estimation filter algorithms.

A communication system and method receive, at an energy management system disposed onboard a vehicle system formed from a lead vehicle and one or more remote vehicles, trip data that represents one or more characteristics of an upcoming trip of the vehicle system along a route. A selected portion of the trip data is communicated from the energy management system to a distributed power system disposed onboard the vehicle system. The selected portion includes identifying information and one or more orientations of the one or more remote vehicles. Using the distributed power system, communication links between the lead vehicle and the one or more remote vehicles are established using the identifying information and the one or more orientations.

The system comprise IR sensor disposed at the front of the train facing the direction of travel. The IR sensor receives images of the rails in front of the train. The system comprises pre-stored vibration profile of the train's engine that is used to eliminate influence of the engine's vibrations on the accuracy of the received images. Presence of rails in the received frames is detected based on inherent differences of temperature between the rails and the substrate in the rails' background, such as the railway sleepers and the materials underneath it. The system may detect defects in an electric conductor system of a train.
