The field of interest is divided into one or more areas of interest, with one or more LIDAR sensors positioned to detect the presence of one or more objects within each of the one or more areas and to provide alerts based on the detection and behavior of the objects such as movement or other parameters associated with the objects.

Position determination method and system
10780905 · 2020-09-22 · ·

A method of determining the geographical position of a rail vehicle travelling on a defined route that has a number of known stopping locations separated by known distances. The method comprises steps of: recording a linear speed signal of the vehicle; processing the linear speed signal to identify a plurality of preceding stationary periods when linear speed equals zero, including a last stationary period, and to calculate the distance traveled between the plurality of preceding stationary periods; comparing the calculated distances with the known distances between stopping locations, to match the last identified stationary period to a corresponding one of the known stopping locations and identify the direction of travel of the rail vehicle; and determining the geographical position of the rail vehicle by processing a portion of the speed signal obtained since the last identified stationary period, to calculate the distance traveled from the corresponding stopping location.

Wireless train management system

A train control system comprising a track switch controller; RFID tags located at first and second track switches coupled via a length of track that store characteristics of train sets as they pass the track switches, and RFID tag readers located on the train sets, connected to a network. The train sets write data to the RFID tags such that the data is read by RFID tag readers of subsequent trains; and the data stored in the RFID tags is overwritten with new data each time a train set passes by the RFID tags.

System and methods for determining train direction and speed using laser measurements. The speed and direction determinations can be used to monitor, diagnose, and/or report the operational performance of a crossing warning system.

Radio blocking in a train control system
10752267 · 2020-08-25 · ·

A train control system configured to automatically execute and ensure compliance with all requirements for radio blocking. A radio blocking module of the physical train control system of a lead train retrieves and displays the appropriate clearance points for acceptance by the train driver of the lead train. Once accepted, the clearance points are transmitted to a trailing train for display and acceptance by the train driver of the trailing train. An accepted clearance point is passed to the train control system for use as the next destination point for navigation purposes. The train control system can also electronically log all acts to comply with applicable radio blocking requirements.

Evaluation unit for a sensor arrangement for railway monitoring, sensor arrangement and corresponding method

An evaluation unit 10 for a sensor arrangement for railway monitoring is described, the evaluation unit 10 comprising a connection to a position sensor 11 and a connection to a tracking sensor 12. The position sensor 11 is capable of detecting rail vehicles 19 passing over the position of the position sensor 11 on a railway track 14 and provides a position output signal 15. The tracking sensor 12 comprises a fibre optic sensor 16, which is capable of detecting the position of noise along the railway track 14 and the tracking sensor 12 provides a tracking output signal 18. The evaluation unit 10 provides an output signal 13 that depends on the position output signal 15 and the tracking output signal 18. Further, a sensor arrangement for railway monitoring and a method for evaluation of railway monitoring signals are described.

ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED PNEUMATIC RAILWAY CAR WITH END OF TRAIN DEVICE MODE

A system that allows an electronically controlled pneumatic (ECP) railcar to be optionally selected as the ECP End of Train (EOT) device when that car is positioned at the end of a train regardless of its physical orientation. This eliminates the requirement to use and install a traditional End of Train (EOT) device at the end of an ECP train while maintaining the same train integrity monitoring functionality that is typically provided for train brake-in-two detection and closed cut-out cock detection. The system also eliminates the requirement for a dedicated EOT device at the end of the train for ECP RUN Mode operation, and allows any ECP car to function normally as part of the train or act as the EOT device when selected.

METHOD, VEHICLE DEVICE AND CONTROLLER FOR OPERATING A TRACK-BOUND TRAFFIC SYSTEM
20200207390 · 2020-07-02 ·

A method operates a track-bound traffic system which in a particularly efficient manner and at the same time with a comparably low degree of complexity allows the position of at least one vehicle end of a track-bound vehicle to be ascertained. For this purpose, the method is carried out such that a track-side device transmits first information which directly or indirectly characterizes the location of the track-side device and second information which directly or indirectly characterizes the travel direction of a track-bound vehicle. The first and second information is received by the track-bound vehicle at the location of the track-side device; and a position of at least one vehicle end of the track-bound vehicle is ascertained by the track-bound vehicle on the basis of the received first and second information.

Sensing and Indicating Motion of a Rear Car of a Train
20200207385 · 2020-07-02 ·

A device for attachment to a train having a lead locomotive or control car and a rear car in a track network having a plurality of tracks is disclosed. The device may include at least one sensor. The sensor(s) may be disposed with the rear car. The sensor(s) may be configured to generate sensor data associated with at least one of a heading of the rear car of the train or a distance between the rear car of the train and an object in the track network. A communication interface may be configured to transmit the sensor data to at least one receiver. The receiver(s) may provide at least one indication based on the sensor data.
