The steering system includes, in some embodiments, a steering shaft, a steering column jacket encircling at least a portion of the steering shaft, an emulator enclosed within a housing, the emulator coupled to the steering shaft, and a travel limiter assembly enclosed within the housing and coupled with the steering shaft, the travel limiter assembly comprising at least one rotational member having a pin and a groove configured to receive the pin, the groove including a stop portion. In some embodiments, the at least one rotational member and at least a portion of the steering shaft rotates within the housing and the pin travels within the groove until the pin encounters the stop portion after a predetermined degree of rotation of the steering shaft.

Systems and methods of decoupling vehicle steering assemblies with indication of vehicle direction

A vehicle includes a steering column assembly including a steering column. A steering wheel apparatus is connected to the steering column. The steering wheel apparatus includes a steering wheel hub that is connected to the steering column and a steering wheel rim that is connected to the steering wheel hub. A clutch mechanism selectively decouples the steering wheel rim from the steering wheel hub thereby allowing rotation of the steering wheel hub within the steering wheel rim.

Steering system

A steering system includes a steering shaft that rotates along with an operation of a steering wheel; a motor configured to generate a torque that is applied to the steering shaft; and a control unit configured to control the motor. The control unit is configured to control the motor such that a rotation speed of the steering wheel decreases gradually to zero when automatic rotation of the steering wheel is stopped, in a case where the steering wheel is automatically rotated as an adjustment process of adjusting a rotational position of the steering wheel.

Vehicle control system and vehicle control method

A vehicle control system controls a vehicle of a steer-by-wire type. The vehicle control system is configured to execute: driving assist control that assists driving of the vehicle; and conjunction reaction force control that applies a steering reaction force component to a steering wheel in conjunction with turning of the vehicle caused by the driving assist control. A driving assist direction is a direction of the turning of the vehicle caused by the driving assist control. The conjunction reaction force control includes feedforward reaction force control that moves the steering wheel in a same direction as the driving assist direction without depending on a steering angle of the steering wheel.

A method for operating a steering system includes the steps of: (1) acquiring a variable at least during the partially automated driving; (2) determining whether or not the driver wishes to control the vehicle manually using a variable; (3) ending the partially automated driving and converting steering movements applied by the driver into steering movements of the motor vehicle via a front-axle actuator unit irrespective of the current rotational angle of the steering wheel, if the driver wishes to control the vehicle manually. The variable acquired during partially automated driving may be any of the following: a driver gripping force applied to the steering wheel, a driver torque applied to the steering wheel, deflection of the steering wheel, a gradient of the driver gripping force to the steering wheel, a gradient of the driver torque applied to the steering wheel, and deflection gradient of the steering wheel.

Haptic language through a steering mechanism

A system, and method for communicating navigation information to a vehicle operator through actuators in a steering mechanism for a vehicle. The steering mechanism can include multiple actuators along or in a surface a vehicle operator touches to steer the vehicle. Different numbers of actuators can be actuated under an operator's hand to communicate the severity of an upcoming turn. Alternatively, an actuator can be actuated by different amounts to communicate the severity of an upcoming turn. Proximity of an upcoming turn can be communicated by cycling actuators at different rates for different turns. By actuating actuators under an operator's left hand or the left portion of a hand, a left-hand turn can be communicated. Conversely, by actuating actuators under an operator's right hand or the right portion of a hand, a right-hand turn can be communicated.
